Hey, so I am freshmen at Coastal Carolina University. I live in New York and was attracted to the campus, weather, location, and it was one of the only schools I got into. I wasn't very motivated in high school. I was mainly focused on playing basketball instead of school. I also didn't really have any aspiring goals after high school. I didn't know what to do so I didn't work hard and my grades in high school reflect that as well as my SAT scores. I graduated with a 2.7 GPA and 460 verbal, 470 math, and 470 writing. 1400 total. Or 930 for Math and Verbal. After going to Coastal I found what interested me and became much more focused in school. I like finance and other subjects closely related to finance, but majoring in finance would be fine for me.
I also don't feel like Coastal is a good school in term of academics. I feel like I am hurting myself if I continue to go to this school because I am now much more motivated and think I should be looking at schools that will give me more opportunities and help me more when I graduate.
Some of my EC's are:
-3 year varsity basketball player. Team Captain SR Year.
-Volunteered at Boys and Girls Club for 3 years.
-Customer Service Representative at a Supermarket for 2 1/2 years
-Worked at a state park title "pool maintenance" for 3 summers.
-Joined S.T.A.R. at Coastal. (Students Taking Active Responsibility) aka volunteering
-Joined S.G.A. at Coastal. (Student Government Association)
I just got my grades from the end of my first semester and got a 3.9 GPA and took 16 credits. Next semester I am taking 18 credits and hoping to achieve grades just as high and am going to work hard for them, obviously it's easier said than done, but I am hoping. I have been looking to transfer since about the middle of the semester just to go to a more serious school and a better business school. A lot of the schools require that you go to the university first and then if you perform well you might get into the business school. I kind of want to stay away from these schools for the obvious reason that if I don't get in I'm pretty screwed and might have to transfer or something again. I applied to SUNY Binghamton, Buffalo, and Albany, but not sure how good there business schools are compared to others that I could get into or if that even matters. Also SUNY's are much cheaper for me since I am instate. So what do you guys think I should do? I mean I'd apply to the top schools like Wharton, Ann Arbor, Stern etc.. but don't think I'd get into them considering my performance in high school. So what schools do you think I could get into and is it worth going to a top business school specializing in finance or maybe go to a SUNY and save money? I've been stressing and haven't come to any conclusions. Any help would be appreciated thanks. And sorry if I left something out I typed this once already and it didn't go through =( haha.

Anyone…?

I don’t really know much about the Business Schools at the SUNY’s, I would suppose they would be fairly decent. That might be a good option for you as well, paying in-state tuition, and going to a school that would be better than your current school.

On applying to the top business schools, realistically, your SAT’s and high school G.PA are far too low for admission to these schools. It would be next to impossible. Probably not even worth the application fee this year.

If you wait to transfer as a junior to these schools, you would at least get a fighting chance, as schools will put less emphasis on your high school stats and more on your college performance.

Again, the Finance industry is pretty wrecked at the moment, it might be different when you get out of school, so there’s hope there.

Um, have you been taking finance classes in freshman year? I’m wondering because usually Finance classes start in the upper-divsion level…

binghamton is not bad. but i would also look into RPI’s business school. it’s going to be very tough transferring up, especially for business schools.

The classes for my major are going to start next year if I stay at Coastal and I doubt many schools will accept them if I transfer. So look at a SUNY to save money and more realistic to get into. Buffalo is easier to get into then Binghamton. Or wait another year at Coastal and see what I can get into then? I don’t think transferring more than once is a good move correct?
