Transfer Issues

Hello all,

A search for academic renewal yielded a thread on this website. The thread in question didn't provide much assistance - just a lot of ranting about FERPA blocks and what not. I'm 22, a recent Navy veteran, and doing well in my classes (currently 4.0). However, about four years ago I attended a local community college and did very poorly. I was going through relationship/family issues and didn't have the time to study, let alone show up to class most days. Academic renewal won't apply to me because I never received a grade of D or F. But I do have a few dozen units, most of which are C's, and a baker's dozen worth of W's.
After speaking with a UCLA rep today, I'm rather disheartened. I found that students with a GPA lower than let's say 3.8 for select, impacted programs, are immediately dismissed; it doesn't matter how well you explain your personal growth and that all bs because it won't be read. The combination of my previous scholastic follies with my current successes will leave my GPA less-than-desirable, and as such completely out of the running.
So here I am, asking for advice from anyone who can provide it. I'm unsure of the best course of action to take. In case it makes a difference, I'm a computer science major wanting to pursue A.I. and mechatronics.

Thank you in advance for any advice given.
