I'm thinking of taking a year off after graduation due to financial issues. If I apply for freshman admissions, can I take classes at a community college during the fall semester and submit them as part of my application, or would it have to be during the summer? And, what is the maximum number of credits you can take without having to apply as a transfer (generally)?

Sorry it's not really a question about transferring, but I didn't get any answers in college admissions and I thought you guys would probably know more about it anyway.

Thanks

Actually, is it even possible to apply as a freshman after taking a semester of community college? What is the maximum number of credits before you are forced to apply as a transfer?

Each college and university sets its own policy about transfer admission. Some will consider you a transfer if you have completed one credit at a community college after HS graduation. Others will consider you a first year applicant if you would begin classes after completing up to 29 credits. There is no hard and fast rule.

Stop by the community college that you are thinking of taking classes at, and ask them about their experience with students applying to the colleges/universities on your list. They may have some ideas for you.
