Transfer out of davidson chances

Hi, i’m looking to transfer into UPenn CAS from Davidson College in NC, where I am currently a freshman.

i had a 3.43 GPA this past semester, which doesn’t sound that great, but since the average GPA of freshmen is a little below a 3.0, i’m probably around top 10-15% of my class. Davidson is pretty tough, however i dunno if too many people know that.

my college classes 1st semsester included:

Econ 101: B+
Anthropology 205: B+
International Politics 141: A-
Philosophy 160: Pass (took it P/F)

high school:
2280/2400 SAT, (730 verbal, 750 math, 800 writing)
GPA: 88/100 (I did alot better in college than in high school, relative to classmates- also, my high school is pretty prestigious, the top 10% all go to ivy’s, and people down to the top 3rd get in, some even lower rank)

AP Scholar with Distinction
National Merit Commended Scholar

EC’s
Wrestling- (NCAA Div. I letterman-i wrestled this past year-, in high school: Conference Champ, 2x prep state placer, state national team member)- I will also try to walk onto Penn if i am accepted, however they’re pretty good and probably won’t be actively recruiting me

i also did alot of scientific research while in high school, spent 3 summer working in chemistry/nanotech lab, along with a hematology lab and a genetics/pathology lab. I was listed on a co-author on a paper published by the pathology lab this summer.

Volunteer work: i received a Presidential Gold Volunteer Service Award, for providing over 300 hours of community service my junior year. This included mostly unpaid research, but also special olympics, home repair, etc.

Wow, Ohsix, its almost scary how much you and I are both in the same situation. I am applying to Penn as a transfer from East Carolina, and I am willing to wrestle for Penn if it helps my chances of getting in even tho, like you said, they are rather good. I wrestled for a nationally ranked PA team in high school, but I took a year off as I did not wrestle at ECU. Well good luck with everything and if all goes well maybe we will be future teammates, lol. take care.

I have a lot in common with you ohsix.... I am applying to Penn (among others) from Bowdoin, and my grades were very similar. I also have similar sats and high school + national merid, ap scholar etc. I'm pretty worried/nervous frankly...

i think you'll both be fine, although it's best to have a few other transfer schools in the ring. i went to bowdoin and, when a friend of mine transferred out because of size, she was pretty successful. i'm sure her grades were b+/a- range. but it didn't seem that difficult. and another girl i knew transferred out to brown without too much trouble. my friend was accepted at cornell and upenn among others. so...don't sweat it. if you can describe a real reason for wanting to be elsewhere that's tangible (size, location, etc. are typically good reasons, or programs not available at bowdoin/davidson) then i think you have a good shot.
