Transferring Chances to Penn, Columbia?

do you think I have a shot at transferring to Columbia or Penn halfway through my sophomore year (i was a freshman this past year)? thanks for taking the time to respond.

Current School: top 10 Liberal Arts College, supposed to be pretty tough to make good grades, though I don't think anyone really knows that/cares. However, only about 6% of the graduating class had over a 3.75!

College GPA: 3.61 (thru freshman year)

Classes taken (of note) include a 300 level political science class (which I got a B+ in, unfortunately, and a 200 level Anthropology class, which I got a B+ in also.

High School GPA: 88/100
SAT I (New): 750 Math, 730 Verbal, 800 Writing
SAT II: 750 Math I, 720 History

Activities/EC's:
-Executive Board member of Asian Student Union
-Asian Student Union Student Government Association Representative
-Wrote for a school paper intended to increase international awareness on campus
-Varsity Wrestling (Div. 1, 1X Letterman)
-Summer Program in International Affairs working in New York City, interning at an internationally-known nongovernmental organization, supposedly a selective program

High School EC's

-3 Years of Scientific Research, actually mentioned as a co-author on a paper published in a "The Prostate", a scientific journal. Worked in hematology, genetics, and nanotech labs
-Wrestling throughout High School

Awards (College)
- Division I Letterman for wrestling
- Coach's Award for wrestling
- Fellowship-grant recipient (1 of 4 selected), which got me money for the summer program i mentioned above
- Recommended as a College Writing tutor

Awards (HS)
- wrestling credentials (i dont think they matter)
- AP Scholar w/ Distinction
- National Merit Commended

so... my problems with my school is that it is small, and has a very southern and homogeneous student body. I really don't seem to relate to people on campus very well, and I believe there are some academic drawbacks, especially with the tough grading and the lack of reputation.

I was going to maybe try and say that my school really doesn't have a legitimate science program, which I heard might work (I also have made A's in my Calc and Physics class to back up my interest), as a legitimate reason to transfer. Otherwise I don't know what I should say.

I'm applying to both as well. Didn't know they accept spring transfers( i doubt they do but i'll check). Seriously, your stats and EC's are great but noone can really predict whether or not youll get in. Theres some dude who got into penn with a 3.3 G.P.A. this year. Bottomline- you just have to apply and see what happens. It'll probably come down to your essays- just spend time on them and try and make them unique.

do you go to davidson?

.........bump

Oh yeah.

OP - you have a great shot at Penn and an ok shot at Columbia.

im confused; do columbia and penn have spring admission deadlines?

i just checked on their sites...they don't.

You have a shot, but you might want to hedge your bets with more schools. Also, the non-Ivy top 20 (Georgetown, Northwestern, WashU, Chicago, Rice type of schools) are much more transfer friendly. Use them as matches.

yea i was just wondering if there are any schools at which slightly more academic preference is given (like they really think your school is THAT hard)...
