Transfer Predicament (JMU/Ohio U)

I'm currently a freshman at Ohio University and I plan on transferring to JMU at the end of the year. However, OU has 3 10-Week Quarters rather than everyone else's 2 15-Week Semesters.

So I'm taking 19 credits my first quarter, 15 my second, and probably 15 my third. This totals to 49 credits...

Plus I have an additional 5 credits for passing the AP Lit exam.

Where does this put me at transferring to JMU?

Also, what math courses should I take that satisfy JMU's transfer admissions

Generally speaking, 3 quarter hours = 2 semester hours. Your 49 quarter credits = 32+ semester credits. This is a reasonable load for a freshman student to have completed.

If you know the program that you want to transfer into, look for the specific degree requirements on the university website. Then figure out which courses at your current university are most nearly equivalent to those classes.

Good luck!

Oddly, I, too, transfered from Ohio University; I’m now at The George Washington University. I have transfer credit evaluation experience from a few different schools, some seem to be better than others. For example, New York University transfered all of my credit hours and nearly all of my courses transfered exactly over to fill general requirements. In contrast, GW rewarded me with all of my hours (a four credit hour course transfered to 2.66 semester hours and five credit hour courses transfered to 3.33 semester hours) but not all of my classes matched cohesively with GW. This mismatch set me behind a few general requirements so I’m having to play catch up. With your schedule, you shouldn’t have a problem with entering as a sophomore.

I’d review JMU’s course catalog and try to have the courses you’re taking this year at OU match as closely as possible so that when you enter next year, you won’t get shafted and have a bunch of elective hours.

Thanks. Also does that mess up my GPA or anything like that?

Your GPA will be reset once you get to your new school. Though your GPA will be reset, your OU GPA will still have importance if you apply on furthering your education and going to graduate school.
