Ok so im a freshmen at the University of Miami from Northern Virginia. After my first semester Im not sure I want to be there My Sophmore year. I have identified a couple schools of interst please give me your thoughts:
First semester gpa: 3.6
HS GPA: 3.8
SAT: 1330/1990
Also participate on UM Track and Field/XC team.
Here are the schools Im looking at:
William and Mary
Davidson
Northwestern (father=legacy)
Emory

I think you can get into all the schools you are looking at...depending on you college gpa...otherwise your scores seem to be right in the range of the schools you listed

I am from No VA. I like some things about UM, the academics are good, the weather is nice, and I LOVE being an athlete on the XC/Track team. However Miami is not the place for me. Im not into the clubbing lifestyle, nor do I have the money to afford it. The parties are cool, but I am just as happy some weeks going to see a movie, or just chilling with some friends, and unfortunately most students are more into going clubbing or some wild house party. As well I am the ONLY underclassmen on the Track/XC team, which is kinda a bummer. All of the other members are juniors and seniors, which is ait, but it puts me in awkward situations, being the only one under 21, as well as living in athletic housing on campus, when the rest of my team is in off campus housing. The people down there off campus especially are just generally not as nice as they burn through red lights giving you the finger for crossing in the cross walk, when its your turn, and alot of people are very into themselves. I feel I would be better going to somewhere closer to home where the people are more "warm" and activities are more centered around the campus, small parties on campus instead of going out and blowing hundresdss in south beach. This help?

I get what you're saying. My S feels the same way you do and is also considering transferring although he is on the fence about it. There are some things he loves about UM, but he shares your feelings about the clubbing scene and partying while most nights he would rather just chill or see a movie.

If he does decide to transfer, he is considering a small state school with a very artsy and laid back reputation. Maybe a state school would be worth considering as the kids could be more money conscious.

Of the schools you mentioned, the only one where I know a few kids that go is Emory. There is a strong possibility that you might encounter the same sort of attitudes you find at UM there. Otherwise, I am not familiar with schools around VA or the others you mentioned.

I wish you the best of luck with your decision as I know it's not an easy one. Keep us posted!

I'll be a junior next year and was considering UM as a school to maybe transfer to. I currently go to WVU, which has a pretty big party scene which I am over but would like to go to a school that is a little bit more academically challenging/prestige and has some nice weather. Since you currently go there I was wondering did you have tough time making friends? How are the building conditions the class rooms are in?

Ya from what iv heard WVU does have a big party scene, Miami isnt exactly lacking in one though, a little too much for me i guess. Anyway the campus is beautiful, its much like being on a resort. On the other hand the dorms are pretty awful, probably the worst of any of the schools I looked at, luckily your in Miami so your not really in the dorms that much. As for the classrooms i guess theyre about average, not incredibly nice but not terrible either. As for making friends, being on the XC/Track team i went in immediately with a group of people to hang out with, whom I pretty much hang out with almost all the time, which is cool, but I really dont know that many people that arent athletes...I can tell you though that going from WVU to Miami is going to be a HUGE culture change.
