I was wondering whether or not I should transfer to the University of Miami. I am a junior college student. My grade point average in high school was terrible (2.7) and I have completed the 30 college credits UM requires so that they waive my high school record and my SAT scores. I have a 3.3 college GPA and I have spent the past two semesters on the Dean's List. I'm also a minority(black) if that even makes a difference,as well as a Florida resident. If I think I have a good chance at getting in (60% or higher) i'll apply but if not then I'll save the money I would spend on an application. I grew up loving the University of Miami and its my number 1 choice and I wish to enter as a criminology major but I need some feedback as to whether or not I have a decent to good shot at being accepted.

I applied as a transfer to Miami last year, I didnt get in. I was in the same situation as you. I had a 2.8 HS gpa, but my SATs werent great either. Plus your college GPA is alot higher than mine was and they still didnt reject me on the first try, even after they got my GPA and SATs they sent me a letter asking me for my second semester grades. I screwed up though and eventually got rejected. But I think that if I was that close to getting in with my GPA you defenitly have a shot, I would see if you could get a fee waiver for the application if your worried about that, because its a really steep fee, I think its $65.

What school do you go to? What ECs do you have? Why would you rather go to UM than the school you presently go to?

Deacon86,

I attend Miami Dade College, I work alot so I really don't have that much time for clubs or EC on/off campus(unless you consider my job), and my reason for wanting to go to the University of Miami is that growing up in Miami, its the cream of the crop school down here and I feel I would get the best college experience and education there and not have to move away from home.

If/when I apply and they ask me for my following semester grades like they did for you, should I consider it a good or bad thing? (Good, being there showing interest in me or Bad, they don't neccesarily think my grades are good enough)

I would say its good. They get alot of applicants and you might just be on the verge of getting in. Think of it this way, if they were gonna reject you why would they waste their time asking for your grades? If they want to know your second semester grades they are interested and you still have a chance. If only I hadnt messed up my spring 05 semester, I would probably be at Miami.
