transfer question

Hello, I am currently a student at a community college in San Diego. I know about the transfer exam and the statistics of students accepted from CC's but I have some questions about how to make an application stand out.

Obviously I will do my best to get into some type of research program, be it SURF or something else. Failing research, are there other activities which are smiled upon by the admissions officers? I am in the process of becoming a tutor and I belong to the school's honors program. The tennis team is also something I am looking into. These activities, along with some community service, are good for applications but it seems Caltech would expect more specialized science activities. Can anyone share a bit of wisdom about this subject?

yea I am planing to transfer too. But I don't know on what the admission committee will put most attention. By the way, UpQuark do you know the statistics for transfer students from other states? thx:)

I could be mistaken but the stats on the Tech website are national. This pretty much means that, if we both applied for transfer the same year and got in, 4 other people would also get in. Luckily only 60-70 people apply each year.

OOOOoooo, finally a thread about transferring to CIT, yay.

I also want to transfer just like you guys. Does it really look good if we participate in the SURF program? If so, then I should probably try to get into it next year...I just started at PCC this year, and will be there for 2 years probably...

I now know that for freshman, the national competitions in Math and Science are always good, but do they matter for transfers?...

UpQuark, I'm sure that if you are a tutor, are involved in intercollegiate athletics or something similar, and you do community service then that will obviously benefit your application. I agree with the fact that they do want to see something math/science related but other than SURF, I don't really know anything else.

By the way, what does it take to get into SURF? Is it hard/easy? What do students have to do on their part? Is it just an application that we have to fill out or are we selected? I don't have any real knowledge on this program.

Hehe, all my friends look down upon the acronym "CIT."

But to actually contribute to the discussion, there's absolutely nothing stopping you from educating yourself! http://admissions.caltech.edu/research/surf/

These resources are there for that reason. Have a blast. :D

I was looking for personal experience or opinions, but this will do fine, I guess...
