Transfer Reasoning

Background Info - I’m planning on apply to a few Ivy Leagues as a transfer student. I am currently a freshman and my GPA is going to be around 3.2-3.4. However, I am class president of over 5000 students and in a well known and prestigious university already. I also hold many other roles in student government that are just below the position the president and plan on making very big changes.

So If I apply to Ivies, such as Harvard, and say I want to transfer because I made a mistake of having a low GPA would this be a good reason(average transfer GPA IS 3.7)? I’d say that I’ve learned my mistake and plan to balance out my academic life from extracurricular more and that there would be no better place to do so than in their college.

I don’t know if I should even mention this reasoning since Ivies are known for having smart people.
If you could include more valid reasonings that’d be great too!

Having a low GPA is NOT a good reason for applying ANYWHERE.

In any event, even if you are at a prestigious university, 3.2-3.4 won’t get you into any of the Ivies.

It’s great that you’re heavily involved on your campus but I’m not quite sure I understand your reasoning. You want to transfer because you made the mistake of having a low GPA? I’m not entirely convinced that you coming from prestigious university wanting to transfer to another prestigious university because your GPA is low would do your application justice.

Can you perhaps put it in another way to help us better understand?

If you’re a freshman you have time do get that GPA up to a 3.5-3.6 by the end of the spring semester and I think ivy league schools only take fall transfers anyway. No ones gonna take GPA as an excuse unless you’re applying to a lower tier school than you’re already at for grad school purposes or something and I doubt thats the case with Harvard. Get the GPA up next semester AND THEN say you learned from your mistakes and ACTUALLY DID learn to balance social life and academics better.

“I am currently a freshman and my GPA is going to be around 3.2-3.4.”

Get off of CC. Forget about transferring to an Ivy League school. Get to work and get your GPA up. Concentrate on learning whatever they are teaching in your classes.

“I also hold many other roles in student government”

Is this something you do instead of studying? I don’t understand how this is going to end well.

I have to agree with the other posters. I don’t think your GPA is going to be sufficient to transfer to any of the colleges in the Ivy League, unless you have some really exceptional connections (i.e. parent is a faculty member, etc.). In any case, having a low GPA (or even having learned from it) is NOT a reason that they would accept you.

Thanks everyone! I learned a lot and I’m going to try improving my GPA.
