Transfer-should I live off campus?

I'm planning to attend UCLA as a transfer student from a cc next fall. Right now I'm trying to decide where the best place to live would be. I was looking at some of the school's off campus apartments, and it seems like Landfair Vista might be one of the better values. It looks like some of the shared rooms actually cost less than $7,000 per year, which is far cheaper than anything else I've looked at: http://map.ais.ucla.edu/go/1005434

I'm rather skeptical about this, Is there anything I'm missing here, and does anyone have any experience with Landfair Vista? How would I actually go about registering to live in an off campus apartment, is it like applying to live in a dorm? I saw that UCLA offers meal plans for off campus students, though I couldn't find any info about the price; how much would a meal plan cost?

Lastly, I've also been considering commuting. I live about 40 minutes away from the campus and I know that UCLA has vanpool shuttles that pick students up from my neighborhood, though I doubt I would want to put up with this commute everyday.

If anyone has any insight that could help me decide on my housing situation for next fall I would greatly appreciate it.

You can get a meal plan, but it costs more per swipe to buy a meal plan than it would to just pay for individual swipes through easy pay. Someone did the math on this forum already.

If money is an issue, vanpooling could be a great way to save money. Housing here is expensive.

okay, thanks for the response. I’ll probably skip the meal plan. Does anyone have any experience with the vanpool or the Landfair Vista apartments?
