Okay, so I was rejected by Yale for freshman admissions, and will be attending Columbia,
I will try to enjoy Columbia, and do like the classes, however it is not what I am looking for my undergraduate experience. I want to major in polisci with possible emphasis on comp. gov and especially british politics. Yale offers both better resources and texts. Apart from other personal reasons, including the fact that I don't love NYC, I met the standardized tests average for admissions, and had a 3.9 gpa for high school, plus etc. Over the summer I will be concentrating on Political extracurr. activities and concentrating on what I love which is politics. Furthermore I am a minority.

This is not a chance thread, what I would like advice on is whether or not I should apply as a Sophmore or Junior transfer. I think that my application will be quite different seeing as I failed to convey both my interest in Yale and Politics in the freshman app, but do you guys think I should wait seeing as they already rejected me once? Thank you for your input, and your advice is gladly appreciated.

In my opinion, you are jumping the gun here. You haven’t started college yet and you are planning to transfer. Your transfer application will largely be based on how well you do in college…so right now, you have NO INFORMATION on that…so it’s very hard to tell you “when” to transfer. What if you do not so great your freshman year? Will you really want to apply to Yale again? They accept a very small number of transfer applicants.

And lastly, you may find that you actually LIKE Columbia.

Heaven’s if you hated it THAT much, why did you apply there in the first place?

If you can keep your grades up at Columbia, and know for a fact that you want to transfer to Yale even after your first year, I see no reason why you shouldn’t apply to Yale for sophomore transfer admission. If you don’t make it in as a sophomore, at least you’ll have another shot to apply the following year for junior admission.

Two important points for you to consider nonetheless:
- Yale’s transfer admissions process is MUCH more competitive/selective than its freshman admissions process.
- It’s worth giving Columbia a shot. You may find certain advantages to being at Columbia that you wouldn’t have at Yale (lots of government offices, non-profits, etc, and the UN building in NYC). Plus, going in with the mindset to transfer may ruin your Columbia experience and prevent you from really enjoying your time in college. That would especially suck if you’re unable to transfer (which is likely given Yale’s ~2-4% transfer acceptance rate) and have to stay at Columbia.

Good luck!

you guys are right. I should wait at least till January to see how my grades are going or if Columbia grows on me. Thanks for the advice.

make sure your GPA is 3.8+, and try to get involved with student orgs on campus. you might come to like columbia though. one of my friends recently graduated from columbia, and choose CC over yale.
