hi im currently an mechanical engineering undergrad in my sophomore year. Im looking to transfer to a good school somewhere on the east coast (tired of the west). Im currently holding a 3.68 gpa and (hopefully) keep it through this year. Currently looking at UMASS or BU or Northeastern, any other suggestions?

Thanks!

There are a number of good eng’g schools in the NE. However, they will be pricey for a transfer student. Transfer students rarely get much aid. How much will your parents pay each year?

Your budget will LARGELY determine where you can transfer. If money is an issue, do NOT cut ties with your current school until you’ve seen the FA pkgs from your transfer schools. Where do you currently attend?

However, if your parents will pay full freight for any school, then you’ll be fine.

Well i would be footing the bill by myself with minimal help from my parents, at my current university im covered with financial aid

oops forgot to say University of Nevada Reno

Well i would be footing the bill by myself with minimal help from my parents, at my current university im covered with financial aid

well, very likely you will not get that level of aid as a transfer.

Also…YOU cannot borrow much. The amounts that YOU can borrow are:

frosh 5500
soph 6500
jr 7500
sr 7500

So, you really can’t “foot the bill” yourself. You don’t have the means to do so.

Where do you currently go to school? It sounds like you go to a school that either has good institutional aid, or is able to combine good state aid with fed aid. you won’t get that state aid if you go OOS.

university of nevada reno, those amounts are for federal loans not including pells?

Yes, those are federal (Stafford) loans without Pell.

If you qualify for a full Pell Grant (EFC 0), then you’d get…

$5550 Pell Grant

$7500 student loan (as a junior)

$13k in aid.

That’s not going to pay for a school like UMass, NEU, BU. Again, transfer students generally do not get much aid from schools like these.

The loan amounts are based on the fact that newish grads do not earn enough money to make larger loan payments.

Do NOT cut any ties with your current school until you see the FA pkg from any transfer schools. Keep in mind that any Plus loans that show up in the FA pkgs are for PARENTS, and most parents will not take those out…nor should they.
