Transfer Student Needing Assistance.

After literally stumbling upon this forum, I jumped right in to reading and gaining all the information I could. Right now, I am currently a first year at a Jr. College (to complete my basics) and have almost 30 hours completed. I have been wanting to transfer into The University of Texas at Austin, however, the only thing stopping me is the money involved. My parents are against me going to this school and told me they would not fill out my FAFSA or co-sign a loan for me? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

Well, right now you’re stuck. You will be able to get a $7500 unsub loan w/o your parents info for FAFSA (I think they have to sign that they aren’t willing to fill it out), but you won’t get any other aid. $7500 won’t be enough if you have to live on campus.

Why are your parents against this school? Where do they want you to go?

Well, my parents keep on talking about how I should stay one more year at my Jr. College. The funny thing is they kept trying to persuade me to go to a College in Mississippi (Millsaps or MSU) as a second year and said they would pay for school. I showed them that with out-of-state tuition it would be more expensive PLUS they both did not have as good of a Petroleum Engineering school like UT has. Their ideas are primarily based on ignorant opinions towards the students and city. It is very ridiculous and childish, but unfortunately I have to put up with it.

So there are no other ways around it? If they were to have an epiphany and decided to fill out my FAFSA, what would be the maximum amount of loans I could receive?

Depends on your income. Your EFC (expected family contribution) will be determined based on how much you and your parents make, along with assets and debts. Is there a possibility that you might qualify for any academic scholarships through the school? You also should call the financial aid office at UT to see if they have any suggestions.

google FAFSA - I think you can fill out a preliminary one to see what your EFC would be.

If they are against the school, why would they sign it?

Oh…I thought that you were going to transfer after your soph year. The max you can borrow is $6500 for soph year.

It sounds like they fear Austin and UT for some reason.

How much are they willing to spend on MSU or Millsaps (ask and get a commitment from them).

BTW…haven’t we heard on CC that Petroleum Engineering is dying and something else is taking its place? Or is my memory faulty? (which it could be!!! )

What do your parents like about MSU or Milsaps?
