I'm looking into transferring to Gettysburg from Grinnell, partly for personal reasons but mostly because the theatre program isn't that great at Grinnell. I was accepted last year when I applied from high school, so I'm hoping that I'll be able to get in again. I was hoping a current student could answer some questions, because I want to be sure that I choose the right school this time!

-Are students cliqueish at Gettysburg? Like, would I be able to have a really diverse group of friends, or would it be more like I find a group and stick with them?

-Are academics good? How are the professors?

-I've heard Gettysburg is a pretty big party school. True? Are students looked down on if they don't like to party?

-Is there much religious/political diversity on campus?

Thanks guys for any help you can give :)

You can be friends with whoever you want here. There are definitely cliques within dorms and everything…particularly on certain parts of a hall. But this isn’t any different than you would find at any other school. We have more diversity than people suggest…it is not all homogenous.

Yes, academics are great! You are going to find some boring professors, of course, but the history classes are amazing here. Even if you aren’t majoring in it, most people take at least one before they graduate. There are some great professors too…some are so great at treating you as an adult, while also being caring and understanding. Most professors allow for extensions if you are in a bind…and I even got one of my professors to let me take a final exam early because mine was supposed to be on the last day.

It is more of a party school than admissions makes it out to be, but it is not necessary to participate in it. I don’t drink, and I haven’t been to any parties yet, and I manage to find people that are like me. They even have an alchol-free dorm for upperclassmen that is apartment style. It’s really nice because they have all singles, a basketball court, a game room, and a kitchen. I was worried abou the drinking…I definitely see evidence of it on my hall…someone was even found to possess marijuana near me…but it doesn’t affect my experience or my grades at all. (I got a 4.0 this semester, even with all the noise in my dorm.)

Yeah, there is ethnic diversity on campus. It is a very preppy (J. Crew, Vineyard Vines) campus, but there are definitely those that don’t fit that mold. People are usually nice hear…sometimes random people will just smile at me when I pass them. You should definitely come here! I am a First Year, but I really love it. I am so glad I chose this school…would never think of transferring.

Our theatre program is great too! A lot of people in my dorm participate and I think they are pretty well-attended. They have major plays and more minor shows during each semester. I think you would fit in well here.
