Hello all
some of you may remember me, but maybe not. Well I'm applying as a transfer here at the end of the semester and I was wondering if anyone else is doing the same. Discuss away, and GO BLUE!

same here. Not sure if I’ll get in though. I have a 4.0 at my university right now, but my high school gpa was 3.5 so not very strong. My act was 29…maybe I have a shot, but probably not.

^you’re being ridiculous.

HEY, MECHIGANBOY! I remember that you applied to Michigan last year cause I remember seeing your name from the threads. But anyways, I’m going to apply for a transfer, but I’m not gonna make it. My GPA is horrible. Great job quepasta on having a 4.0. That’s excellent, man. Just out of curiosity, what university are you currently attending? How about you MechiganBoy?

I’m at western michigan university…it’s free for me otherwise I would have gone to msu or something. And I heard that Michigan still puts a lot of emphasis on high school grades cause we only have one semester under our belts for college… which is why I’m doubting I’ll get in cause my high school grades were not good.

oh and Emaheevul07 am I being ridiculous in the good or bad way?

Hey guys glad to hear you’re all transferring to UofM for next fall. I plan on doing the same and will be working on my app, hopefully submitting it over break. I figured why not apply, it’s worth a shot. I realize my chances are slim at best but whatever.

My first semester of college I managed a 3.8 GPA, only took 12 credits because of calc 3.
Calc III - 3.6
English Comp II - 3.9
Physics I - 3.9

High school GPA - 3.74 unweighted, ranked top 11% in class.
APs:
Calc BC - 4
German Language - 3

26 on the ACT (weakkk) but i retook it this December and hopefully I scored at least 29 or so.

Significant EC’s:
Joined the Oakland University Formula SAE team this fall. Have been avidly involved until recently our garage had a giant fire in it, so now we aren’t allowed to go in there until it’s cleaned up. I wrote one of my essays is about what we do as a team and how i’m learning what being an engineer is all about. I’m not sure if anybody knows what SAE is but it’s basically the college version of Formula 1. We build and engineer a race car from scratch and compete with other schools, really cool stuff. I got an interview with a large automotive company for an internship (rare for a college freshman) from being on the team and having an impressive portfolio/resume.

Varsity cross country and track captain for two years
Rocket Club
Key Club
Sales Associate at Finish Line
Managed own lawn business
Relay for Life cancer walk

Awards:
Departmental Honor in Physics senior year
Scholar Athlete
Magna Cum Laude

I plan on really emphasizing my passion for engineering (i’m applying for mechanical) and how I’ve become a better critical thinker in my essays, as well as how the opportunities that Michigan offers will allow me to grow further as an engineer. I really don’t think I have a shot to transfer as a freshman having not many classes under my belt, but what the hell. I want to get involved with a professor and do some lab research because it seems really interesting to me and would be fun. What do you guys think? I appreciate the time and I’ll try to chance some others as I became pretty familiar with the application process last year when I applied as a senior (made it to waitlist).

^
I think you have a pretty good chance. Everything seems to look fine except for the act, but if you got a score around 29 you should be fine. Although engineering is really competitive, your high school and college GPAs are high enough. Good luck!

PS: you should turn in your app soon, because they look at them on a rolling basis. just turned mine in today…:/

I turned my app in when I was a transfer student on the LAST day before the deadline, because my college gpa went from a 3.0 to a 3.7 that last semester and I didn’t want to turn my transcripts in until that change came through, and I was accepted in February.

Quepasta, you’re not a shoe in but I wouldn’t be despairing over my chances if I were you. Your HS grades will count, but a 3.5 isn’t THAT bad for IS and you have a REALLY good college GPA. You have a solid chance even if it’s not a sure thing.

@ Quepasta, thanks for the feedback! I think you have a solid shot and your 4.0 is very impressive. I’m going to try and get the app submitted by the end of December. I’m just waiting for the ACT results to come out. I still don’t know if I have a shot because I only took 12 credits the first semester (mistake but my parents practically forced me to only take 12). Whatever, good luck to everybody and any additional feedback would be appreciated. I think you guys all have a decent shot.

So will they not start accepting people until after the transfer deadline?

Probably not.

Haha one last question, did you get your acceptance through email or letter?

I remember you too mechigan. How are you doing at cmu?

Yall what’s up. Kinda forgot about this. I’m doing well at CMU. RA Next year in a res hall and holding steady at a 3.6 GPA. Not awesome but an A- average nonetheless.

I hope more transfer applicants post on this thread kind of like what happened earlier. I really want to know what kind of stats other people have when they apply as a transfer.

I applied as a transfer last fall and was admitted this past March from a Michigan community college, GPA 3.9, all classes taken transfer to UM. My best advice: schedule a campus visit with a counsellor, let them know you are interested. UM had a transfer session in April 2010 that I attended in Grand Rapids MI where they were giving a presentation on the transfer process, what they were looking for, tuition, etc. There were probably eight people from UM there and, maybe, a dozen students who attended. I ended up having lunch, one on one, with a admittance officer who handles transfer admissions–BINGO! We talked for maybe 25-30 minutes, and I got some great info. Trust me–UM knows the names of the students that attended. Make no mistake–you need the classes and the GPA, but I think it does help to get your name know as someone who has made the effort to actually attend events or visit AA, showing them you really want to be a UM student.

3.78 one year at San Francisco State
3.9 second year at Orange Coast College (JC)
3.5 in HS, admitted and will be attending LSA in fall 2011

I’m thinking of transfering at the end of my first semester freshman year - I’m wondering where everyone else is at currently and why they want to go to michigan

Currently I’m enrolled at George Washington :D

I also had some questions about the process:
- I’m wondering when they let us know if we apply before the oct 1 deadline for the winter 2012 term.

will they see our first semester college grades even though the semester isnt finished yet?

is it possible to receive a “conditional” acceptance? My friend tried to transfer to Vanderbilt and got a conditional acceptance provided that he maintained a certain gpa at the end of the semester - does anyone know if mich does that?

goblu3- I don’t believe Michigan has any other definitions or transfer other than current college student applying for admissions so I don’t see any rules preventing you from being able to transfer. However, if you are attempting to transfer “up”, as in not being admitted as a freshman and trying again, I highly doubt you will be admitted. This is because you will essentially be applying as a high school senior again except with all your grades but you will be pooled together with all the other transfers, usually with excellent college grades, and will suffer from a huge disadvantage. Also sophomore transfers that had excellent (3.8+) 2nd semester high school senior grades and 1st semester college freshman grades (3.6+) were still not admitted simply because junior transfers were given preference so you would be at a disadvantage compared to both. So basically, there is almost no chance Michigan would admit you if you are trying to transfer “up”. Now of course if you were admitted to Michigan as a freshman, this would be a different story but then I would wonder why you didn’t just enroll as a freshman and not have to go through this.

Michigan does not see your first semester college grades, they come out with a decision before your first college semester is over. Also I do not believe that Michigan grants conditional acceptances, at least I haven’t ever heard of it.

Honestly, if you are really interested in Michigan, the earliest you will most likely get in is as a 2nd semester sophomore. It is possible if you have excellent high school senior grades and freshman grades that you can get in one semester earlier but that is the best case scenario you can hope for. Generally Michigan will not take people transferring “up” as a sophomore.

snackyx,
I definitely agree that it is important to get your name out there, especially to the admissions people! Sending emails is another great way to do that.
