Transfer Timeline

Hi, i’m a high school senior and I start taking CC classes in May. I’m planning on transferring to a university for the 2018/2019 school year. Because of my AP Classes, i’m going into CC with ~22 credits, so i’m only taking around 10 classes, so i’m transferring next year. I was wondering what the timeline for transfer was, because I look at some of the transfer deadlines and they’re in February/March. So I would apply for transfer in the fall, i’m assuming? Would it be beneficial to take more classes over the summer so that I can build a stronger GPA for transfer?

Thank you! I’m just trying to get a general idea of what the timeline is because i’m a huge planner and i’d like to go into CC with a concrete goal and timeline.

It would absolutely be beneficial to have more credits and a strong GPA for your transfer applications. I think the one thing you have to be really careful about is that AP classes look really good on a high school applicant’s transcript, but for transfer admissions, the colleges are going to look really carefully at your college grades. While lots of people (especially those with strong high school stats) do manage to transfer with just their fall semester’s grades, you will be a much stronger applicant with more than 15-or so college credits behind you. In addition, if you didn’t do well in high school, then it’s even more important to have a strong college GPA.

@thetransfercoach I was pretty strong in high school, i’m only going to CC for financial reasons. Would the transfer colleges ask for my high school GPA and transcript as well? I’m pretty much just going to be applying to the same colleges.

Some universities ask for High school transcripts and ACT/SAT scores regardless of how many units you have.

Some universities will waive the requirements for one or both depending on how many units you have. For example, Rutgers says this:

Transfer students who have less than 24 college credits completed are required to submit (a) high school transcript(s). For transfer students who have completed 24+ credits it is recommended to submit (a) high school transcript(s).

and also this:
SAT/ACT Scores

You are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores if:

You graduated from high school two or more years prior to the date you intend to begin classes at Rutgers.
You finished high school and subsequently completed 12 college credits with final course grades available by the Application Due Date.

@thetransfercoach I would try and take more credits, but i’ll be finished with my associates in the spring, so if I were to stay it would only be for extra classes that don’t matter for my degree. I decided to change my schedule around, so I should be done except for 1-2 classes that i’ll take during the spring. So, by the time I apply for transfer I should have 15 credits at least

@philbegas Since I’ll be applying to the same colleges, would I have to send those again or would they already have them on file?

Better to ask them
