Transfer to Brown: Tell me everything you know!

Hi there.

I’m a brown transfer hopeful.

Please tell me everything you know about transferring to Brown. Especially what college GPA you need.

My stats, in short:

1370 SAT
3.96, top 10% in HS
GREAT ec
A little admin help from the rugby team

I transferred into Brown with a 4.0 from a state school, but from other transfers I know (et cetera) I would think you have damn decent chances.

Please explain further, like about the other transfers you know.

Oh yeah, and I go to tulane and am a neuroscience major, visual art minor and womens studies minor.

And by the way, what's it like to be a transfer at Brown? Tell me everything you got!!

Thanks again, all

I also got waitlisted when I applied

I was waitlisted when I applied, as well.

I've heard that numbers-wise, it's more competitive for transfers to get in than for freshman -- but, from anecdotal evidence only, the transfers I know run the gamut of academic and extracurricular achievement. There are lots of transfers from community colleges and so on. I wouldn't worry too much. It's really just a waiting game.

The one thing you may not know about being a transfer student at Brown (it wasn't entirely clear to me and some of my fellow transfers): No. Financial. Aid. Period. Not in your first year, and not in your second or third. You don't get a dime.

The other thing is that you will get stuck in a dorm you probably won't be thrilled with. For reasons that absolutely baffle me, they house transfers last -- so I have friends who were placed in suites with complete strangers, et cetera. I was put in the worst freshman dorm on the very fringes of campus. On the top floor. My friendship opportunities were kind of limited to the couple-dozen other transfers in the same boat -- all the people I had met during orientation and so on were a solid 5 to 8 block walk away. Doesn't really foster friendships.

That said, I love it at Brown and don't regret my decision in the slightest. I don't know anyone (out of the transfers) who isn't happy here. As I said, we tend to be on our own (i.e. expect many/most of your friends to be other transfers, unless you go out for a sport or so on), but that's not neccessarily a bad thing. But we integrate well with the community and whatnot. Because there is no core curriculum here, don't expect to feel swamped when you get here. Forget about your minors, just focus on your neurosci classes and take whatever electives sound interesting. (Some students choose to double-concentrate, but if you go that route expect to not have much elbow room in your course load given your limited time frame.)

If you have any specific questions, let me know.

Yeah it seems like they give transfers the short end of the stick. If I get in I'll be playing rugby. They (rugby) really want me there so hopefully they will like me. Anyways, is it easy to make friends with non transfers? How about the freshman in your dorm?

I know about the financial aid thing...and oh man it stinks. I have a lot of financial need but I want Brown so bad I'll be willing to take out a lot of loans. Do they give you stafford and perkins, if you qualify?

I made very few (i.e. one) non-transfer friends, but I'm not a very outgoing person in general, so your mileage may vary.

You can still get Federal grants/loans, but they don't really amount to much. Brown itself doesn't even bat an eyelash at you.

it should be mentioned that although fin aid will definitely be limited for transfer students (at least in the foreseeable future), transfer students successfully petitioned this year for increased fin aid funding. a rather substantial increase was recently recommended to the present and we anticipate it to be a lot higher next year

Wait, when did this happen?

just this year. there's no formal announcement or anything. for next year's incomming transfers financial aid should be approved quite a bit though

does the concentration you put down have any weight in the process? I'm applying to either the Community Health or Biomedical ethics concentrations. How popular are these departments?

Also, so can you choose/rank the housing that you want, or they just automatically place you? And you can't live in upperclass housing?

dcircle: do you go to brown? can you tell us more about the change in financial aid? I have a family EFC of only 18 grand (and we can't even afford that amount!), so financial aid plays a huge role in my ability to transfer

Rafter: Are there any other ways that transfers get crappy treatment/shafted?

yeah, i'm in the same boat. I'm actually going to Rhode Island tomorrow for a week(we're staying in Newport at some resort), and we're going to take a trip to Brown sometime next week. I'll take pics!

Go the newport creamery and get an Awful Awful Milkshake awful big, awful good)

Silly question: are my chances slim if I have no pull? I literally have no connection to the school. No relatives went, heck, no friend's parents went XD. I'm just curious, did any of your successful transfer students have any sort of contacts (profs, adcoms, interviewers?), or should I chill out? I just worry, because it seems like everyone tells me that Brown transfer is for the kids with connections that didn't get in the last time (I'm being a tad hyperbolic, but still).

I hear it's good to call them and make some contacts of your own with admissions people
