I got a friend doing Econ at Emory. He wants to apply to some top business schools and other top schools (economics).

He has a 3.4 college GPA (don’t know if it matters but it is a rising trend with lowest grade being first semester of freshman year and raising since then) He has a 1410 SAT from the olden days and 700-750+ for 3 SAT II’s. He has great recs and 2 interns under his belt if you include this summer.

What are his chances at:

Upenn-College of Arts n Sciences–Econ

Cornell-CAS Econ

NYU- Stern

Uchicago Economics

Stanford Econ

Brown-Econ

Dartmouth-Econ

I know this is the Cornell board but if you could give opinions about the other schools then that would be great. If not, just focus on his chances at Cornell Thanks in advance for any help.

He knows I know a lot about colleges so he asked me specifically but I was a bit unsure about transfer information so I decided to see what you guys though on this board. Obviously you'd all know a lot more than me. Thanks for your reply, Figgy.

With the Goizueta School among the Top 5 undergraduate business programs in the US, why does he want to transfer? The only reason could be that the degree from there doesn't carry as much weight as it does in the South and the NYC metro area.

Of the schools you mentioned, his transfer chances will be slight -- you should look at the transfer percentages at each of these colleges. The one school where he looks okay IMHO is NYU Stern. BTW, SAT scores don't count as much in transferring as they did in the first round; the strength of the college transcript and the essays will make the most difference.

He didn't tell me specifically why he doesn't like Emory but I think he doesn't like its business/economics. The implications tell me he definitely doesn't feel it is a top 5 just because businessweek says it is. Anyways this is mostly what I got from talking with him.

Thanks for the reply though. More chance evaluations would be great.

Hey BBall87...
Have you made your decision yet? Is it NU for you?
Wishing you all the best... enjoy your summer and relax. You worked so hard at Cornell, you need to chill out a bit now! At least Chicago and NU (among your choices) will give you a longer summer!
