Transfer to Emory (Fall 2015)

Greetings! I’m currently a freshman attending a liberal arts college ranked between 40th and 45th in the US. After applying myself and trying in the college setting, I’ve realized that an institution like Emory, one that is larger and has far more opportunities, is best for me. Also Emory has programs that especially cater to my interests.

Now on to the stats

My GPA at my current institution after two trimesters is a 4.0

Out of the 6 courses I’ve taken, half have been hard sciences, one Calculus 2, and the other two a writing course and a foreign language

Currently I’m a Neuroscience major on the premed track

My GPA in high school was around a 3.5 unweighted
I’m a white male from the New England area, and I come from a rather rural high school. No other graduate of my high school has gone on to Emory.

Member of the D3 indoor and outdoor track team for four years, moving onto championships every year.
Countless hours spent volunteering in a Rotary organization, both abroad and in the community for four years, serving a leadership position my senior year. Went on two service trips to El Salvador my junior and senior year to build houses, and I earned the opportunity through participation in the club.
Elected as president of National Honor Society of our school, which I helped raised money for scholarships for other students
Member of the Math team and Quiz team, captain for both my senior year. I was ranked top 10 within the state for math team, and went on to the quiz championships senior year within the state
Went to a competitive summer program hosted by a state private school my junior year, taking a course in Engineering.

As for the recommendation and two writing portions for the common app, I believe they were all strong.

Addressing my writing scores, I’m aware they’re a tad low for the institution I’m applying for, but I’m hopeful that my AP scores and A grade in the writing course I just took should help with that situation. I’d say I’m cautiously optimistic, but please do correct me if I’m wrong. I’m happy to provide more details, so let me know if there’s something!

Thanks!

Bump! A chance me would be really helpful.

Bump again! Tell me if there’s anything I’m missing!

Bump!

I think you have an excellent chance. Your GPA exceeds their mean GPA for transfer students. Your biology and Habitat for Humanity ECs are great. The others are fairly blasé. The real question is, why Emory in particular? In your essay and personal statement, I hope you expounded upon why exactly Emory is the best option for you, versus prestige-seeking.

It looks like you have a great chance.

I didn’t even have prestige particularly in mind, what I had in mind writing my essay was the fact Emory is a leader in the biological sciences, and has so many opportunities between Emory Med and the CDC being right next door. I also discussed my specific interest in psychoneuroimmunology, a field that Emory is heavily involved in. I also talked mainly about why I feel so strongly about transferring in the first place, that being in highschool I never really put my best foot forward, and I’ve tried doing differently ever since I’ve entered college. In doing so, I’ve discovered my interest in simply a bigger institution, and especially Emory because of the opportunities it has.

Thanks for the responses, I truly appreciate it!

Has anyone heard anything?

Nothing yet. I’m guessing we wont hear by the 30th, as the date was last year.
