Transfer to HAAS

@jcsberger: oh, my bad  thought all CCs were the same
@sobizzle: WOW, your stats are amazing!!! But can I ask how old are you now? it seems to me that you’re over 25 (having years of working experiences and family’s responsibility, sorry if I’m wrong)

About me, I don’t think I have anything special in particular, just stuffs that other people also do like:

  • 4.0 GPA Honors Program (if that helps)
    -Student Government’s Treasurer
    -Business Club’s Treasurer
    -PTK’s treasurer
-Having about 500hours of community services (tutor Math, Econ, English, Accounting, Chemistry at school)
  • 2.5 years volunteer work as an accountant for a local Chinese supermarket (started in my senior year of high school)
  • My only working experience is on-campus employment as a lab aide (it doesn’t seem to matter a lot in this case though) and private tutoring
  • And some other awards which I don’t really think are impressive anw (Presidential Award, Business Scholarship, Leadership scholarship, etc.)

I know other people who apply to Haas also have similar profile like mine, if not much better :(. I’m not founder of any club nor am I having years of working experiences. Probably because I’m only turning 20 this year and went to CC right after graduating from high school, and I didn’t really know how to work extra 25 hours per week for work into my current schedule anyway :frowning:

—> I doubt my chance of getting in!!! (but USC/UCLA is still fine with me, assuming that they’ll let me in)

@sobizzle: I seriously think that you’ll get in, wish I could have your stats  good luck!

Yeah, those are the things I worry about, I am 25 now, and I do have years of experience on the one hand, however a lot of those years were lost to foolishness, so I am pretty much starting fresh. In fact I just started school last spring and actually managed to get 2 AA’s by the end of fall, I completed 61 units in the spring, summer and fall semester - which is actually why my GPA is lower than it should be, I rushed a little too much.

What I am worried about is the fact that you have just as many, if not more experience in the Academic community and with your Extra-Curricular activities as I do. On top of that your GPA is nearly a full half-grade point higher. Which is why it is difficult for me to believe I will get in if they consider GPA first then begin looking at the candidate. (I have this vision in my head that they look through all the candidates with the prereqs filled, then of those they drop out anyone below 3.65 or so, then carefully examine the essays and EC’s of the “top” candidates.

My work experience is only gained because of my failure to recognize the significance of a good education early on in my life, and most of the people on this board have the drive I failed to acknowledge. So, with that said, for those who have been working as hard for so long I hope you all get in over me, but if they’re is still one opening then let me have it. Ha!

I have only been working hard for the last year on this goal, others have been working since high school and earlier, so I would not feel in the least cheated or disappointed if I were not selected. I just decided to take a chance on the unlikely and see what happens. If nothing else I will definitely focus on going to Berkley Law in the future.

oh wow, you guys all have pretty amazing profiles.
I hope you both get in. :)

woow you guys profile are awesome. I think you’ll get in
if you’re an international student and most of the internship/volunteer activities obtained outside united states, does it really matters where you get the experience?

hey guys. I do want to transfer to UC berkeley but I am a freshman in the University of Alabama. It’s really hard to find the transferable courses which can meet the prerequisite of UC berkeley. How can I do?Really need your help.

@sobizzle: I really think Berkeley does not care if you made mistakes in the past. Especially when those mistakes motivate you and help you achieve such a great profile and be more than ready to transfer. Also, I believe that Haas prefers a diverse student body, that’s why someone like you may even have more chance than someone like me. Since I’m not “special,” you know… I just do whatever I can!

@doonroy +itsyouitsme: thanks guys, I’m keep my fingers crossed… (though I’m also trying not to put too much hope in it, lolz… I don’t want to end up being severely disappointed :frowning: :()

@itsyouitsme: when you apply as a transfer, they’ll focus on the activities +ECs that you have after graduating from high school. So, as long as your internship/volunteer activities are what you do after high school and/or in college, you should be fine. Are you trying to transfer from outside of US?

@carol2009: the only advice I can give you is to call and take to an academic advisor at Berkeley (or Haas if it’s your goal). Although keep in mind that transferring to Haas (I’m not talking about Berkeley, just Haas) from out of state is extremely extremely competitive (I don’t wanna say it’s impossible, but…) Anw, good luck with transferring!

I know it is compeitive. I really wanna try it but I will apply UCLA and USC too to make me more safe.haha.thank you!

@tatty: i was graduated back in 2007 and I went to university in my country for a year and did an internship and some voluntary activities during the break. Then, last fall I came here and started over in CC. So, can I counted my internship experience back in my country? I’m hoping I can, because it’s sort of business related.

Hey, you’re special. I mean it’s incredible to held all those position in two years period of time. I’ll keep my finger cross for you guys. U all have an amazing profile  woow 10 days to Cal announcement rite?

@itsyouitsme: of course you can, coz they’re gonna ask for “the activities you did after high school,” so all of that still help you with the admission
And thank you, although it’s not like I’m holding 3 positions at the same time, I was treasurer for PTK and Business club first, then when I got elected as Student Government’s treasurer, I had to resign from the other two positions (it’s the policy that I can’t hold Student Government’s Execs and Club’s execs at the same time). But ya, it was a fun experience, so if you have an opportunity, I’d strongly recommend you try it out :)

@carol2009: yup, you’ll have great chance with USC :)

I really really wish Berkeley can just offer me Econ!!! XD

To carol2009:
If you’re applying for USC, it does have a very good business school.
However, the surrounding community around USC is said to be unsafe.
Additionally, USC does not offer guaranteed housing to transfers, which means there’s a high possibility that transfers have to live off-campus.
Combining the two: transfer students have to live off-campus in an unsafe environment during their first year when everything is unfamiliar.
I just thought you might want to consider this. :)

Best wishes.

oh darn!!! my second choice is USC, and I really really really wanna stay on campus if I go there (I don’t wish to die anytime before 75 :frowning: )

To doonroy:
Really thank you for your reminder. I do want to transfer to UCB.But I am afraid of not being accepted by UCB because I am out-of-state student. Meanwhile, I don’t know which courses are transferable to UCB which make transferring more difficult.Do you think if I talk to the advisor in the UCB, they can give the specific transferable courses between the university of Alabama and UCB??

Haas is really tough to get into because majority of students applying have high GPAs and stellar E/Cs. It’s really difficult to differentiate yourself from your competition - you really need to find your niche.

I applied for 09 and am waiting for the results. From my experience here are some suggestions you should consider.

-Before you go involved anywhere, make sure your taking the right classes and you will have them completed by the end of your Spring term.
-Aim for a high GPA, 3.8+ is safe ground. Anything below puts you at risk.
-Involve yourself in leadership positions. This doesn’t mean getting a stellar internship. If you enjoy art for example, start your own club, organize community art events, etc. Make sure you show your passionate about it and you have potential to be a leader.
-Start brainstorming your essays early and submit them to as many people as possible. I started writing mine about 8 months before they were due. Sounds a little crazy but this really helped produce a solid final product.
-Any other questions PM me.

Best of luck to you.

To Russkiy_Bear,
Really thank you for your info.It is important to me.Are you cal student?I am out of state student. So it’s not easy to find transferable courses.I have to see the catalog of UCB and UA(my university) and match the courses.
Can you list the extracurriculum activities you have taken before applying for USB?I am in the first semester of freshman so I didn’t have many ec’s.I have to start now.

carol2009: word of advice.
If you REALLY want to go to UCB attend a California Community College, then transfer.
The UC’s give preferential treatment to ccc students over anyone. Out of state transfers get the least priority.
Also, when it comes to transferable courses it’s a big gamble. CCC’s have articulation agreements with the UC’s, so there isn’t any confusion.
I know transferring to a CCC sounds crazy, but if you really want to get in it’s the best way to make it happen.

Carol-

I hope you are aware that it’s a little more difficult to transfer to Haas as an out-of-state transfer. However, don’t let this hold you back. I don’t know what your background/experience is but I would start looking for school year/summer internships now. It will be very difficult to find anything right now considering the weak economy. If you aren’t able to find something I highly suggest you join your schools student government, start your own club, or take a leadership role in any on-campus or off-campus activities.

I’ve made a chance there about a year ago with my background but I have added more since then. Try searching for my thread. I’ve done a lot of internships (hedge fund, accounting, and I am currently doing an Investment Banking internship). In addition, I’ve taken an executive position with our business club on campus and competed in a handful of case studies.

I am not a UCB student yet and I will find out next Thursday…it’s really intimidating. But, if you want it bad enough, you will get it.

hey guys, im sorry probably it’s kinda stupid but I wanna ask the type of the personal statement and supplemental essay. Is it kind of flowing narrative essay or description.formal essay? I’m trying to brainstorm mine for next year. :D

Thanks!

To Russkiy_Bear,
Indeed I know the little chance to transfer to HAAS as an out-of-state student. But I still want to try. You have excellent extracurriculums and I believe you will succeed. Transferring is a big trouble for me. My first semester haven’t finished so I don’t have any GPA now, which prevents me from applying for the student government and some other similar activities.

To physicsfem,
thank you for your advice. It really sounds crazy because if I transfer to CCC and then don’t succeed in transferring to UCB, that will become a big loss to me.Also, I think now I can only transfer to CCC next fall.then when I start to trasfer to UCB, I am Junior student. Most time UCB doesn’t accept Junior student, right?
