I'm a freshman at MIT and I really enjoy the academic options available. However, I feel that Harvard College would provide me with a more enjoyable undergraduate experience and would like to transfer for fall of 2008. So, would I have to apply this year? MIT is on a Pass/No Record first semester so I won't have grades on my transcript until second semester. I was waitlisted by Harvard as a senior and admitted to MIT, Stanford, Yale and others.

You shuold have gone to Stanford.

^^definitely lol.. but i dont think you will have a problem getting into Harvard from MIT

Um ok. Why Stanford lol? What I really need to know is how do I report my grades because MIT is on Pass/NR first semester.

Im sure they are aware of MIT's system... and what do you mean by report... all you have to do is have your transcripts sent over

What you need to do is send in your transcript with the pass/fail grades and in addition to that send some sort of more detailed "evaluation" by a professor from each of your classes. I have heard of MIT people doing this- it can be informal.

You won't be the first MIT student to transfer to Harvard- you can contact harvard admissions about exactly what they require in your case.

Ok thanks. I'm mainly worried about faculty recommendations. Unlike high school, professors teach in big lecture halls so I'm hoping for a TA recommendation. Frankly it's sometimes hard to participate in class discussions when so many classmates are that talented. Again, MIT suits my academic goals almost perfectly, but Harvard seems like it would provide a better overall college experience. Do you guys think it would be easier to transfer to Harvard coming from a school like MIT? Also, the transfer application isn't available yet but does the transfer admission application have the checkboxes for faculty recommendation like the freshman application form?

Foxdiel is right. you need to call Harvard Admin. dep. to get accurate answer to your question.
Stanford is better than MIT overall...maybe even in Eng/IT dep.
not sure what your major is.

Ok thanks.
Lol can we stop with the Stanford is better than MIT. I don't even know what "better" means...

Lol..ok... sry

SmartChild if you really think Stanford is better than MIT in engineering you need your head examined.

^agreed, the general view in the engineering world is that Stanford has a relatively weak undergraduate program for the engineering sciences, however it's graduate program is great. MIT pretty much can't be beat for engineering, it's what they do, the only program that tops MIT engineering is berkeley's civil engineering program, and that's cause it's at the heart of earthquake country and has a lot of fun stuff around to study.

You'll probably see my chance thread that I just posted... I'm in a similar situation, but I'm pretty sure you can have your transcript sent from MIT with actual earned grades on them. All professors record actual grades, but then the registrar does the extra leg-work to "cover" them for freshmen... and with this, those grades can also be "uncovered"

... this happens when kids transfer, have certain state-funded, misc. scholarships that require a certian set of grades, or when some kids apply for summer job positions and internships that want to see grades.

Best of luck to you!
