Transfer to Ivy/Equivalent?

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can chance me. As the title of the thread suggests, I'm thinking of transferring to an Ivy or equivalent as a current Sophomore, incoming junior for the autumn 2013 semestre.

Current undergrad institution, Wesleyan University.

Schools:
Harvard
Yale
Stanford
Dartmouth
UPenn
Cornell
Chicago
Duke
MIT
Columbia

Financial Aid? Yes. First generation college student.

Stats:

High School...
GPA - 4.05 Weighted, 3.83 Unweighted.
10 APs, 5s on 8 of them, a 4 on one, a 3 on the last.
ACT 31
SATs... Don't ask = )
Extracurriculars - Congressional debate, extemporaneous speaking (forensics), NHS President. Nationals for congress and extemp.

College...
GPA - 3.98? Sadly, one A-... -_-
Coursework.
Multivariate, Linear, Differential Equations, Diff Geometry, Intro Micro/Macro, Intermediate Micro, Intermediate Macro, Politics in Japan, American Political Theory, Labor Economics, Intro Econometrics, Environmental Economics.

Will be studying abroad at the University of Melbourne next semester. Intended course load... Intermediate econometrics, Graph Theory, Probability, Corporate Finance.

I'm an RA at Wesleyan and currently work for the endowment fund. I worked at Barclays Capital and Stifel's investment banking divisions the last two summers as an Analyst.

bump please?

You’re certainly in the ballpark, which is to say your GPA and courseload are probably pretty competitive. Your SATs, if low, will hurt you, but not terribly given that you’ll be a junior transfer.

Your essays, recs, and reasons for wanting to transfer from Wesleyan and goals at each school will be especially important.

I go to Wesleyan and am (thinking about) transferring this year too! I am only a freshman though. Just thought it was a funny coincidence.

Also, I am planning on applying to a few of the same schools as you. (All but Dartmouth, Harvard, Duke, Cornell and MIT.)

Radiances, do you believe there are more competitive applicants than yourself?

That’s a really good question sometransfer. My boss at Barclays, who’s an MD, worked in Harvard admissions when he was getting his MBA at HBS. His response was…

“All freshman applicants usually look the same, e.g. 2400 SATs, 3 sports, nationals, etc. As a transfer, there is some delineation to the applicant pool as how stats/work experience goes, e.g. they have more to look at in terms of university grades, research, and work experience.”

To answer your question, I’m sure the applicant pool is competitive, but the process is so random that even an applicant like myself has a high probability of not getting into even one of the schools listed above…

To put it in perspective, I’ll be hinging on my work experience as a transfer applicant, as many undergrads, even at HYP, don’t get the chance to work at a bulge bracket banking firm as a college freshman.

Hopefully my recs work out. My essays, though trite, should work. Although I’m not Hemmingway or the writer’s Rembrandt, I should be able to hold my ground.

I do believe there are more competitive applicants, but you should still apply. Of course, I recommend throwing other top 20 colleges you would be almost guaranteed to get into. Rice, Vanderbilt, and Emory come to mind. I would be surprised for you to receive rejection at Cornell, given your statistics are truthful.

Awesome. I might add Rice or Vandy, but anything below that would be on par or below my current institution. Even adding Rice and Vandy is pushing it given the application fees and time spent on college apps.

You’re always free to remove Harvard, Yale, Duke as last year their transfer acceptance rates were at 2% and lower. Dartmouth and Stanford were at 4% each. Although I am encouraging you to apply, you should be prepared for a lot of rejections.

That’s fine. I’m well aware of the statistics and I’m just applying for the non-probabilistic chance of getting in.

We’ll see what happens. I probably won’t get into Harvard, Yale, Duke, Dartmouth, or Stanford. Penn, Columbia, Chicago, and MIT are reaches. I’m hoping I get into Cornell.

OP, out of curiosity, what is your major? which major are you applying to the schools you mentioned as?

If they have a finance/financial economics major, I’ll go for that. If not, economics.

Radiances- just a question: I’m a junior in HS and I’m thinking of applying to Wesleyan. What are your reasons for transferring out?

Finance curriculum, lack of it.

such an impressive profile…i really don’t believe if there are more competitive candidates…just curious, how did you get the two big internships as a HS senior/college freshman?

Met a banker at a the UChicago. He was a VP and needed an intern on board because his Analyst was MIA. I joined the team.

Pulled the all nighters and invited me back next summer.
