Transfer to Lehigh, GWU, Villanova, GTown

Hi I am currently at University of Michigan and I am trying to transfer to GWU, Lehigh, Villanova, or Georgetown. I was wondering what my chances were. After first Semester I have a gpa 1.74 my high school gpa was around 3.6 (unweighted) give or take with 5 AP's and about 9 Honors. I was admitted to GWU and Villanova, never heard back from Lehigh, and denied from Georgetown. My gpa is so low because I initially wanted to be a biology major, but my family thought it was better for me to become an engineer so I came to UM as an Engineer, but realized it wasn't the right path for me. I also told the Universities that is why I also want to transfer and because now my parents want me to choose my path and where I want to attend. So, this semester my gpa should be going up since I am taking more liberal arts based courses.
Also does it matter if you are transferring from a prestigious college? If I transfer from UM which is pretty good school, would I have better chance compared to a student from lets say Rutgers? (I am from Jersey so I'm not hating on Rutgers just an example)
Where do you think I would get accepted as a transfer?
Thanks.

In my opinion, work on that GPA. Most colleges require 3.0+ and consider all the way down to a 2.5. Anything lower i think that won’t look at you. I can speak personally about the GPA, once that thing drops its a epic battle to bring it back up.

Why did you have to listen to your parents at first though? You’re suppose to go with what you’re comfortable with; not rely on other’s decision. Indicate the reason onto your application and you might be condoned. If GT rejected than you, then bring that GPA up to at least a 3.0 since you’ve just switched your major and then try transferring from there.

I’m just curious as to why you never called Lehigh to find out if you got in or not…

So I won’t have any chance of getting into any of those colleges for transfer?
I mean I really want to attend those colleges. Apparently the admissions say they would still consider even though I didn’t quite tell them in detail that I have a 1.74 and the whole story.

Because they were thrilled, that was the best college I got into and my brother is there and they thought that was the best for me. I thought it wouldn’t be that bad, but I learned this year that environment and the desire to attend that college has big influence on how you do academically. I did put on my essay that I am choosing my own path now, etc. Well I dont think I will be applying anymore if I don’t make it this year. I just really love GT so I wanted to apply again.

“I’m just curious as to why you never called Lehigh to find out if you got in or not…”

Because I was accepted to Michigan in January I think and by around March my parents and we kind of decided on Michigan and was just waiting to see where else I would get in and they didnt respond on the date and I email them and they said it might just be in the mail, by then I had to just commit to Michigan. Like I said I kind of just followed what my parents and brother thought was best for me. Now that has changed however.

I just think you’re going to have a tough time with a 1.74 GPA. Especially with Georgetown. As for the other schools, I think they at least want to see a 3.0; they may accept some students with lower GPAs especially if they have legitimate reasons (they were ill, had family issues, were working three jobs to pay for the semester, etc.) but my guess is that the GPAs on the lower end of their acceptances are around 2.5. I don’t like telling someone ‘it’s not gonna happen’ but I do think you should be wary of going through the transfer process and not get your hopes up. They will consider you, because they almost have to consider every application they get…plus when they reject you it makes their selectivity rating go up, and they get the application money out of you.

University of Michigan is a great school even though it’s not the place for some people. I don’t think your academic performance was a result of the atmosphere within the school. It dealt with your apathy towards your study in engineering.

The admission officer will see his reasons as being legitimate if he brings up his GPA to show that he’s passionate about Biology more. If someone had an infidel excuse for such low GPA, then there’s a higher chance of rejection over there.

what if I get a higher GPA this semester wouldn’t that show that I can improve.
Well Michigan is a great place, but it definitely isn’t for me. I am taking mostly LSA courses and I still don’t really like it here, once again not that Michigan is a bad college its great hope I’m not repelling anyone to UM. I also just want to be closer to home and definitely on east coast.
Well to be honest I really wish I can get into GTown, but I know it is extremely difficult, so I am more worried will I be able to transfer to Villanova, Lehigh, or George Washington.
My high school grades were pretty good. I really hope I can get in somewhere.

I assumed in reading your original post that you were talking about transferring for this fall (FA 2010). If that’s the case then my opinion stands as stated in my previous post: you will probably have a difficult time, as you will be applying with one semesters worth of grades and your GPA is 1.73; even if you manage to pull a 4.0 off this semester in liberal arts classes. IF however you’re talking about transferring next fall, then I think you have a much better chance, especially if you rock out your classes for this semester and next semester.

I will be applying to those colleges for the Fall 2010 Admission so by the end of this year I will have 2 semesters worth of grade. I think if I transfer for junior year that will be too late as in it would take time to adjust to another college with not enough time. So you think my chance of getting in those colleges are slim to none with 1st semester of 1.74 and 2nd semester with well it will be higher than that lol.

I don’t think you have a shot at any of those schools right now, especially not Lehigh or Georgetown. You’re going to have to spend the next 2 semesters getting a really high GPA, 3.8-4.0, and then I think GWU and Villanova will be within your grasp.

I don’t know how legitimate that reason is for a 1.74 GPA though.
And it’s also doesn’t look good for you that your parents dictated what you would major in.

Yes, at the end of MAY you will have two semesters worth of grades. However, most schools transfer applications are due within the next month or so. When you apply as a freshman, schools only have one semester’s worth of official grades to look at, and you only have one semester’s worth of grades making up your GPA. You can be getting all A’s right now, and your GPA will still be a 1.74 – it won’t go up or down until this semester is over, and that’s long after you’ve submitted applications and been accepted or denied. A lot of schools do allow you to submit a mid-term report, which shows what grades you’re getting in your current classes, but because it IS only a mid-term grade (I mean I could have an ‘A’ in a class right now and end up with a ‘D’ in it by May) I don’t know just how much stock they put into it. Don’t get me wrong, showing you can get A’s will definitely help, but I would not put too much faith in adcoms seeing that and discounting the grades you actually got last semester. Waiting to apply next year is your best bet if you really want to leave.

so from the looks of it since you guys stress very much on the gpa of college, they pretty won’t consider my high school transcript, essay, etc. because of my low gpa?

They might look at it just to see that you graduated on time, but even if they still put weight into the admissions, it might be less important than your college work definately.

If your SAT score was high, send it in because it would help you gain an admission to any of those schools.

Because I really want to transfer to those universities and would pretty much do anything to be able to get in

Sooo totally ironic!!! I am also trying to transfer to Lehigh, Georgetown, Villanova, or GWU!!! Small world…Just submitted my 'nova app today!

Have you applied to these places yet??? Georgetown and Lehigh’s application deadlines have already passed. I’m assuming that you were accepted to those places (Villanova and GWU) last year as a freshman applicant???

I don’t know if your more prestigious school will make a huge impact. But I guess we can put your theory to the test since we both applied to Georgetown and I am from Rutgers.
