im thinking about transfering to northwestern as a sophmore in the fall 2005 from another "top twenty" school; i was accepted to northwestern off of the wait list in 2004 but decided to go to the other school as i was already committed. i had outstanding extra-curicular activites and other awards in high school but do not have nearly as many as a first-year student at this college. i was wondering if i apply soon...the deadline is may 1...and i have a gpa of 3.5 at a competitive university, just lacking in activities as a freshman, do i still have a chance to get in again? any advice?? thanks yall!

I don't see why you wouldn't try for it. However, I heard that it's harder to get admitted as a transfer because you're competing for fewer spots because they have such a high retension rate.

which school are you transferring from? i transferred from washu in 1995 and had almost no ec at washu. my freshman gpa was 3.9+.

Vanderbilt...but i have a substantially lower gpa than you did...what time of year did you apply?

I don't remember...like March maybe? I think I heard from them like June or something. My buddy that went to same high school in Hong Kong also transferred successfully from UNC. That was a nice union. :)

Just curious, why do you decide to transfer?

Well, i really like vanderbilt, but i just dont know if the south is right for me...iknew what to expect going in, but i think im looking for a different college experience...so, my hope is to get into northwestern! but i dont know if i have a chance!...is that too low of a gpa...my one in high school was substgantially higher! and all of my e.c.s...and will i have a better chance applying earlier, in feb...i feel like wash u is pretty similar to northwestern--what did you see in NU that made u decide to transfer?

Better reputation overall and in engineering. NU's undergrad engineering is ranked 13th and that's really good for a school known for journalism/communication/theatre/music which are kinda the polar opposite of engineering.

Sam Lee, why did you transfer from WashU?

Hmmm..thought I just answered it. :)

LOL oops, I'm sorry!!! I had friends who applied to WashU, that's all. Do you thinkt he school is overrated?

It's probably overrated in a sense that the school was ranked like 20th when I was there and all of a sudden it's ranked like 10th/11th now. A school just can't change that fast in less than a decade. I am no expert on judging the whole school though. It's still a good school.

My last question: Do you think Northwestern is underrated?

Northwestern is NOT the least bit undererated. If anything it is overrated. Wash U is just as good, if not better, than Northwestern. I saw both schools and the overall feeling and mood at Wash U is soo postivie and hapopy, where at NW students, it seemed, were too caught up in their work and were obnoxious. (BTW, I am going to Wash U for school). But that's just my opinion. If you want to see more comments about the whole Wash U controversy and it being "overrated" (which it clearly is not) go to the thread Best Univerities in the Midwest under college search and selection.

It seems like we have a WashU troll on this board.

Mendy, no matter how much you claim WashU is better, Northwestern has better name recognition and more bang for your buck.

Oh my gosh!!! How could I be so stupid? I completely forgot that name recognition is soo important, and that it is why someone should pick one college or another. I am SO sorry. Tenis, what you just said is sheer ignorance and stupidity.

Guys! Let's not start school bashing again. Everybody has his or her own opinions on what makes each school great, and each of these schools has different aspects which make it special. If we start arguing about this, we'll never stop because not one of us will change feelings based on what a few people say on CC.

yeah, this thread definitely went astray.

If name recognition wasn't so important then WUSTL wouldn't be cutting down the entire Amazon rain forest in order to supply enough paper for their mass marketing scheme. If I took all my paper from WUSTL and got it recycled, I could feed a small country in Asia with the money I receive. Clearly name recognition is important to WUSTL.

Quick! Everyone to the WashU board and accuse it of being overrated!
And Mendy, from what you said ("I am going to Wash U for school"), for some odd reason I thought that you actually attend there. But a quick trip to the WashU board cleared that up.

You are really hung up on proving to yourself that WashU is a good school, aren't you? The majority of your posts seem to dwell on rankings and arguments trying to convince people that WashU is better than Northwestern. You even started a thread titled, "Which is the best overall school: Northwestern or Wash U?"

Having second thoughts?
