Transfer to NYU Stern or UC Berkeley Haas

Hi to you all,

I'm currently a student at San Francisco City College and I'm getting closer to the application. Everyone I ask is pretty vague about it so I thought it might be a good idea to give it a shot here. I'm wondering what are my chances to get into either NYU Stern or UC Berkeley Haas (I will also apply for USC Marshall and SF State but I'm not too worried about them).

About me: I'm turning 23 soon, from France. I have a 2-year computer science degree back in France, but chose to change my field of study and come to the US. I've been living in San Francisco since September 2008 and started college in January 2009. My 1st choice would be Stern but will not say no to Haas either.

School Type: Community College
Location: California
Race/Gender: White / Male
GPA: 3.83
Prospective Major: Management or Finance, maybe minor in Political Science

Didn't take the SAT tests, not required where I'm from. Got the PBT TOEFL (600-ish).

Course load: I usually have 15 to 18 units a semester (don't know if it's relevant), didn't know what I wanted during my 1st semester, got 3 Bs, but got straight As since then. Enrolled in the Honors Program.

Extracurriculars:
- Honor Society (ABG)
- AGS member

- 17 years of soccer
- 8 years of basketball (still playing both but no competition anymore)
- 10 years of Skiing
- Travelled all around Europe, went to Africa (don't know if it's relevant, just to say I've been around, and I've seen other cultures)

Volunteering:
- Regular blood donor, and also help the nurses on blood drives
- About 50hrs as a volunteer in some of the associations above

Achievements:
- 2-year computer science degree back in France
- Maintaining a small business' website for a while now
- Internship in a research laboratory

Extra Information:
- Father did not attend any college, stopped in HS, mother has equivalent of AA
- Wish to apply for Financial Aid but will not if it gives me less chances to get in

What is your current status in United States? Citizen? Greencard? Visa, A1, J1? International Student?

Will you be able to finish all the pre-requsite and major classes before finishing spring semester?

You may want to discuss your experience as President of A.S. in France in your essay. For it sound vague to me of whether the system is of the same.

Good luck!

You’re still required to take SAT’s for Stern.

F-1 student visa (so international student). Yeah, I’m taking the last prerequisites this semester. I will discuss the president of A.S position in the essay, it’s pretty much the same as it is here. As an international student, I need the SATs?

Q. Do I have to submit standardized test scores if I am applying as a transfer student?

A. We do not require SAT scores for transfer students if they have completed thirty credits or more on the college level before applying. If a student does submit SAT scores, we will review them; however, they are not a deciding factor in the admissions process.

There seems to be some contradictory information because I’ve seen where the requirement will be waived and where it must be submitted. I would just email them to be definite.

EDIT:

It appears you must submit your SAT scores.

SAT’s are generally required for any applicants, as long as their home countries provide SAT testing, among most top private colleges for transfer student.

Well it’s not required in France… So I probably won’t need them… I’m meeting a counselor next week so (s)he should answer this question. Besides SAT tests, what do you think of my chances?

Berkeley and NYU will give you zero aid whether or not you apply. NYU will want SATs. Berkeley will want 60 credits.

Let’s say I get the SATs (i already have 60 units), are my chances to get into NYU or Berkeley any good?

Anybody? please

Not good, apparently…

Just so anyone can know if they ask, everybody has to give their SAT or ACT scores when applying to Stern from HS or during your 1st year of college.
However, and this is on the NYU Admission bulletin, to the question " am interested in transferring to NYU next fall after my second year of college. I did not have to take the subject tests for the college I attend now. Do I have to take them now in order to apply to NYU for transfer admission?", the admission office answered “You are not required to submit any standardized test scores if you have completed over 30 credits on the college level”.
