Transfer to NYU Tisch or stay at Oberlin College

I was accepted as a transfer to nyu tisch for film, but I am currently a student at oberlin college. What should I do? What will give me the best outcome? I am a film major but I have recently become interested in computer science. I am interested on graduate school, but i would like to have a job for a few years after graduation, and see where that takes me. I like oberlin but I am not sure if it is the best social fit for me. Also after two years in the middle of Ohio, I am ready to live in a city and explore the world outside of school. But there are many things that I like about Oberlin. Primarily its intellectualism.

Why did you apply to NYU as a transfer. What about oberlin that caused you to search has changed? What about NYU made you apply. These are the questions that will lead to good answers for you.

It will be very hard for you to pursue both film and comp sci at Tisch. Combining those two interests (or shifting completely into comp sci from film) is likely to be easier ay Oberlin. Sit down with the course catalogues and degree requirements for both majors/minors at both institutions and see how long various paths could be.

Maybe you could do both at NYU through the Gallitin School where you design your own major?

It depends how important the CS angle is. Also, are finances a factor? As you know, film is a difficult industry to break into no matter what school you go to. I’m also guessing that you chose Oberlin because it does have success in this area, as Lena Dunham and Ed Helms (and many others) went to Oberlin.

Common wisdom states that for cinema studies one goes to Tisch. But I don’t know. Perhaps it’s smarter to go to a school where you can stand out more.

Oberlin is expensive, but NYU is even more expensive. I’m going to repeat what Hapworth said, are finances a factor? $7000 difference may not seem like much when you’re comparing numbers this big, but when you’re the one paying it back, it’s big.

Is money a factor at all? How much in loans would you need for each school? Typically, NYU doesn’t give very good non-loan financial aid, especially to transfer students. How much debt would you have out of NYU v. Oberlin?

If you decide to stay at Oberlin but want to get some city/Tisch level experience, consider doing one of NYU’s summer programs. http://tisch.nyu.edu/special-programs/summer-at-tisch

Money is not an issue. I am fairly interesting in CS and it would provide some security. But is the NYU name worth it? I do love film but I do not aspire to be a struggling artist.

Also how does the name NYU compare to Oberlin College?

Both excellent. NYU is better known because it’s New York and strong internationally

Sophisticated employers and grad schools know both. The average person is NYU by a mile.

Don’t think it means a hill of beans myself.

The average person is entirely unaware of LACs. To be honest, these are two very different schools. NYU is a large, well-known urban university. Oberlin is a rural, well-regarded, very progressive (very progressive!) LAC. I shouldn’t be surprised because there are lots of students, like you, who are trying to decide between two very different schools, but part of me thinks, “Really? Deep down you don’t know which environment is the better fit for you?” For instance, I knew that I wanted a small, intimate LAC. I applied to the state flagship, too, but I didn’t really want to go there; it was a backup in case the FA didn’t work out, making the two LACs I applied to unaffordable. But I definitely knew which environment was right for me.

If you aren’t deadly serious about film, there is no reason to go to Tish. There would be other divisions of NYU better prepared to serve a comp sci major. How much comp sci do you have already? When you look at the graduation requirements for a comp sci degree, which of these two places will allow you to finish more quickly? Which place would leace you more flexibility for electives in case you want a couple more film classes?
