Transfer to UCB from USF (Private California)

Hello everyone,

I would really appreciate your help on this matter. I just finished my freshman year at the University of San Francisco and I would like to transfer to Berkeley as soon as possible. I am wondering whether it would be advantageous to go to a community college next year and transfer from there or stay at USF for another year and apply.

I currently have a 3.925 at USF and have completed 32 units. I also have 8 credits from Stanford where I have a GPA of 3.9.

I will be applying to Berkeley as a philosophy major, which is not super competitive, according to my research.

Basically what I'm wondering is if it is a good idea to go to community college for next year to complete all the requirements and then transfer, rather than staying at USF. I should be able to get a 3.8 or above next year at a community college, conservatively.

Also, I noticed that one can apply to Berkeley by exception. Do you think that it would be possible to apply without all the required units done by exception?

Thanks for your responses, I appreciate it.

you people need to delete admission by exception from your consciousness..
UNLESS YOU CAN SHOOT 40% FROM 3 POINT RANGE, THROW A 90MPH FASTBALL, OR WRACK UP 120 TACKLES AT THE COLLEGIATE LEVEL YOU WILL NOT BE ADMITTED BY EXCEPTION....
that is something schools used to qualify student-athletes who are too ****ing
stupid to qualify of their own merit....

Going to a community college will improve your chances and you'll save some money.

Good luck.

You've been doing good so far. Just keep it up, and you'll make it. :)

ditto on CC...you improve your chances and you save money. what's there to lose?

CC all the way. Just because UC's prioritize Junior applicants from there, though you have been doing brilliantly.

All the best. :)

i'm not sure, but UCs do prefer that you come from a cc rather than a four year.... i'd talk with a counselor at berkeley. not liking the jesuit education or just usf in general?

just curious but how did you get to take classes at stanford? that must've been a blast (and challenging)

jk_91: Probably online or as a visiting student.

to be competative you will have to finish major preqs and igetc or GE courses equivalent to Berkeley GE. Can you do that without going over 80 units?

luckily for you, no CC has any of the major pre-req's for Cal, for philosophy. So you just worry about IGETC (if attending CC).

In response to someones question about taking classes at Stanford, I took classes there during a summer quarter. Also, I took classes through EPGY.

So, it seems that the general consensus is that I need to go to CCC next year and fulfill all the IGETC requirements.

What about taking specific classes for philosophy? Also, how many units should I take. Should I take some summer school classes?

I should be exempt from the math section.

Also, I scored a 2300 on my SAT, will Berkeley care about that? They say that SAT scores are optional for transfers, but I think I should submit them because they are so high.

I'm transferring to Berkeley because its cheaper to go there than USF.

Again, thanks for everyone's help!

When I looked at Assist.org's General Education requirements for Berkeley, I had a few questions.

Am I exempt from foreign language if I took French III? Even if I took skipped French I, took II and III? So I only have 2 years done, but technically I was at the 3rd year level.

Also, what classes should I take? I have my math requirement done.

Thanks!

Actually, I know someone who I think was admitted to UCB as a freshman, decided to go to USC, and then wanted to go back to UCB again after his first year. He wasn't very good, but he was a coxswain for Crew in high school. The coach got him into Berkeley and he quit/got kicked off the team a little into the season and now he's just cruisin' at UCB.
