So I got waitlisted and denied for admissions this year, but I still want to graduate from UCSD with a BS in Bioengineering:Biotech.

This year I will be attending UCI, and I am part of the CHP (campus wide honors program) which gets me priority enrollment, a research project, and the perks of a regents scholarship, just without the money. My major is biomedical engineering.

I am considering trying to transfer/apply to UCSD as soon as I can, but I know it won't be too easy. I'm going in with 28 units (AP credits), and with priority enrollment at UCI I do not have a unit cap (I can go over 20, with as many as I want), so I can try to reach 90 units as fast as possible to transfer as junior into UCSD. I could also apply ASAP as a freshman (??) But on the other hand, I looked at the four year plan for the BTEC major, and it is pretty much planned out, and I'm wondering if my biomedE classes would be accepted by UCSD.

Just in general: would it be possible/advisable?

Your best bet for getting into UCSD is to drop out of UCI and attend CC for a couple years. That way you can do TAG and be guaranteed a spot in UCSD. Although it is not impossible to transfer from UC to UC, it is much easi er to do from a CC. You’ll have an easier time keeping your grades up, you’ll have TAG, and you will also save money.

UCI is a great school in its own right. Personally I would just stick it out and see if you change your mind. But, if you’re dead set on going to UCSD, see above.

Well the reason I’m going to UCI over a CC is because of priority enrollment. I get to sign up first, I’m guaranteed classes, and I can take as many as I want. I know TAG makes transferring a lot easier, but I plan on keeping really high grades (anyways if I don’t, i get kicked out of CHP). The problem with local CCs around here are classes - many people I know have trouble getting them.

Don’t get me wrong, UCI is great. I picked it over UCD w/ Wakeham Scholarship and UCR w/ Regents. However, after reading more on UCSD’s website, I’ve realized that Bioengineering:Biotechnology is the exact major that fits what I want to do.

Can i try to apply as a freshman again this time around (2011-2012) while attending UCI (And hope my units transfer), because I won’t have 90 units?

I don’t think you understand that you won’t be able to go to UCSD after just one year.

^yes not transfer, but apply as freshman?

It’s harder to transfer from a 4-year institution. From what I read, many UCs require/recommend transferring after sophomore year.

How are you going to apply as a freshman if you went to UCI for a year? You will be, by definition, no longer a freshman.

I really don’t think it’s so much more difficult that you’d have to drop out of a UC to go to a CC just to transfer. Rates are likely lower because the give priority to CC students but if you have the right grades then your chances should be good regardless.
