Transfer to UGA or stay at KSU?

I am currently a Sophomore at KSU and have planned since day one to transfer to UGA my junior year. UGA has always been my dream school but I did not have the 4.0 GPA or stellar SAT scores to get in as a freshman. I pretty much had my mind made up that I would definitely be transferring, but now I am having second thoughts.

Some of the main reasons I want to go to UGA include:

  1. It is the perfect distance from home and will truly give me the college experience.
  2. It has been my dream school since I was a kid.
  3. They have a stellar business program and a degree from Terry would look better than a degree from KSU.
  4. The school spirit, there are always things going on, and how much everyone loves their school. KSU does not have as much school spirit and campus life.
  5. I have lived in Kennesaw my whole life and I truly feel the need to go somewhere else and experience new things and live on my own.

Some reasons that I would want to stay at KSU:

  1. I am a member of a club sport and have a close relationship with my team and have the opportunity to be the Vice President in the Fall, which would look great on a resume. My coach is really wanting me to stay.
  2. I am part of the Honors College and receive early registration and other perks.
  3. The classes are apparently “easier” at KSU.
  4. My family is close by in case of any emergencies.
  5. I have established friendships and a good job that pays well.

Does anyone have any advice on what I could do? Everyone tells me to not let others influence my decision, but I am having a very hard time choosing what to do. I feel like there is so much more out there than Kennesaw. I have been told that most employers don’t care where you get your degree from, but is this really true? Thank you in advance for any responses!

It’s nice that KSU has been such a good experience for you. The school has come such a long way since it’s days as a community college/commuter school. I have no doubt that you would get a good education if you stayed there for your degree. As an employer, I’ve hired from there and been very satisfied. But whoever told you that companies don’t care where you get your degree from isn’t living in the real world. When you get a lot of resumes coming across your desk every week, you have to find ways to quickly sift through them. And one of the ways to do that is to look at the university. It’s not fair nor is it a true indication of a graduate’s potential, but it happens. Extracurriculars like your club sport involvement are nice, especially since you seem to enjoy it so much. But a degree from UGA would carry much more weight. Good luck. The great thing is that with your drive, you’ll be fine either way.
