I'm a current community college student who is 9 courses away from completing my Associate's in Arts Degree. I currently have a 3.77 GPA with hopes to increase that in the 9 classes I have left and I am a member of the Honors Program at my college (Wake Tech, if anyone is familiar) and Phi Theta Kappa (International Honor Society of Two-Year Colleges).

Currently, the plan and what I've structured my courses around to is attending East Carolina University in the Spring of 2012 to major in Business. However, recently I've become very interested in UNCW.

I've come to College Confidential to ask the opinions of those who know the schools and which one would be a better fit for my degree.

Some extra information:

I really do not know anyone at UNCW except for a few people and far many more of my friends attend ECU. I'm worried that as a community college transfer student, I will have difficulty making friends if I don't know anyone at the school I go too. It seems different going in as a freshman than as a transfer, in my opinion.

If anyone would could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

I’m going to most likely transfer to UNCW this fall from High Point University. I have been accepted to UNCW. Last semester I had a 3.9 GPA and this semester I have a 4.0. If you have a 3.77 and are in the Honors Program at Wake Tech, then you are pretty much most likely to get in.

There are many advantages to transferring to UNCW. You mentioned that business would be your intended major- UNCW has a Executive Network program in which they recruit many executives of Fortune500 companies who have retired in Wilmington to serve as mentors to business students. About making friends- UNCW has a transfer student organization and also a transfer honor society, which would be great ways to make new friends who are transfers as well. They also have a transfer orientation (basically like freshman orientation but its JUST for transfers). Also- they guarantee transfer students on-campus housing (in the SUPER nice dorms which are like apartments- you get your own room and everything!) so you would be able to meet people in your residence hall as well. UNCW also has CAIC, which is the Campus Activities and Involvement Center, where you can go to get involved with the hundreds of organizations that they have on campus (you will surely be able to find something that you like!).

I understand though where you are coming from about making friends, it’s something I worry about too. However, I think that no matter where you go, the first month or so will be hard, but you just have to reach out and get to know people, and then eventually you will surround yourself with a great group of friends.

I’m not to sure about ECU though cause more of my friends go to UNCW.

I wish you the best of luck!! :)

I’m a current student at UNCW and I absolutely hate it here. There’s no other way to say it- the people are all so stuck up and snobbish. Very laid back and relaxed students who are more interested in going to the beach than going to class. If this is what you look for in college, then you’ll have a great time. I found it sad how all my fellow classmates skipped class to go to the beach (even during the winter!) and the campus community is nonexistent.
