Hi everyone. I am a current student at UCF and I love it immensely. But sadly, they don't have the major I want. FSU has created a major called Computer Criminology (Criminal Justice + Computer Science). This major goes perfect with my goals, I couldn't have created a better major myself. The problem is I really do love UCF and it's a shame parting with it. Not to mention I have heard that computer science is best in UCF (but nevertheless, FSU is one of the best in the nation for Criminal Justice). I am worried that FSU is only a party school. I'm not much of a partier and I'd like to be intellectually challenged. So, should I change schools only for the major? What can you tell me about FSU that will make me want to go there? I've heard Tallahassee is painful to live in. I could major in Computer Science at UCF but the problem is that it's more mathematical than what I would like whereas the FSU major in CC is more about programming, cybercrime, cyberterrorism, cybersecurity and whatnot. So could someone out there please help me out with my decision? Maybe convince me to go to FSU...lol.

Also if anyone has or is majoring in Computer Criminology I'd LOVE to hear about the program.

Sorry for the long thread! Hope someone read this, thank you!

When I was looking at undergrad schools, UCF was my favorite campus. I came to FSU because I was a political science major and figured being in the capital was a good idea. I ended up double majoring with Criminology and graduated this past spring. I will begin the PhD program in the fall at FSU, the number 1 criminology program in the nation!

One of my regrets is that I did regular criminology instead of computer criminology (which would have required me to stay an extra semester or so). You’re right that the computer department isn’t nearly as good as the criminology department. But I think what you’ve said so far is that on an academic level, FSU offers everything you want and a good reputation but that you’re afraid to leave UCF because you like the area. Just remember, it’s only 3-4 years of your life that you have to be in Tallahassee, but the rest of your life that you have to deal with your career.

Also, being a Ft. Lauderdale girl, I understand how Tallahassee seems like the middle of nowhere. But, just like everything else, if you get involved and make friends you’ll be fine. Also, Tallahassee by far has the best drink specials :)

You’re living in a UCF bubble. FSU’s grad CS program actually ranks ahead of UCF’s in US News. Plus like you said FSU has one of the best criminology programs in the country.

@dad07fsu Thank you! You’re comment was very helpful and it’s always nice to get some advice from the voice of experience. I love what you said about it being 3-4 years in Tallahassee but my life with my career. I obviously knew this but for some reason the way you put it is perfect and very true! I know I’ll ultimately be making the decision to go to FSU because my goals matter a lot to me. Hopefully making friends will be easy! Thank you and good luck on your PhD!!

@loller You may be right. Sorry I obviously didn’t have my research checked, I didn’t know FSU CS was better, my bad! That’s something good to look forward to.

If anyone knows anything about the program (computer criminology) or would like to elaborate on the topic It’d be very helpful! I’ve just always been a big city person, so the prospect of a small(ish) town is sort of intimidating. I don’t mean to offend FSU in any way, I’m not big on the whole university competitions and whatnot. I love UCF but FSU has what I need.
