Transfer

Hey everyone, I just had a few questions regarding a transfer to UVA from VCU and I would really really appreciate any response

1) Can you transfer mid year during your freshman year? I applied for the regular undergrad fall 2012 semester as a freshman for the school of engineering but I was not accepted. Now I would like to reapply as soon as I can.

2) Does UVA have a honors program or anything of the sort? If so, what are the requirements to get into that as a transfer student?

3) I was wondering if any of guys/gals out there would be awesome enough to chance me? Now I understand that the admission process is much more complicated and factors in many more variables, but I just want to see if I'm in the general ballpark or if I'm up to par with some of the other people who got into the school I engineering. To be more conservative, you can assume that my essay will be moderately well written (not bad, but also not exceptional). Also I plan to take the hardest math/sci classes I can at VCU.

SAT: 600 (R), 710 (M), 560 (W) -> 1310/1600 or 1870/2400
SAT Subject Tests: 720 (Biology E), 660 (Math 2)
ACT: 28 Composite (27 Eng., 33 Math, 26 Reading, 27 Sci, 25 Combined Eng/Writing)
AP: World History (3), Biology (4), Environmental (4)
IB: Psychology (4/7)
AMC-12: 73.5 (11th grade) - Tie for first place in school
National Spanish Exam: Level 2 - 63rd percentile (9th grade), Level 3 - 72nd percentile (10th
grade)
Virginia Math League: 3-way first place tie at school level (10th grade) and in my senior year I was placed 1st in the senior class and 2nd on the school level

GPA: ~4.24 (W) as of the end of my first semester of senior year

Senior Year Schedule and grades (s1,s2, final grade):
IB English 12 HL - B, B, B
IB History HL - C+, C, C

Engineering Dynamics (Community College, not dual enrollment, Spring Semester -> final grade - C)
Statistics (Community College, not dual enrollment, Fall Semester -> final grade - A)

[My grades were moderately better during my other 3 years of high school. I hate to admit it but I was hit with an extreme case of senoritis this year)

Extracurriculars:
-Free math tutoring (10,11,12)
-Part-time sales associate at Best Buy (worked about 1 year during junior and senior year)

-Did not make varsity team to compete in regional, district, and state competitions
-Robotics

Other Info:
-Co-president of Mu Alpha Theta

If this isn't good enough, what improvements would you suggest? For example, should i retake SAT, ACT or even AP exams in attempt to maximize my application. Sorry for the very very long post, but I wanted to give as much info as I can so that I can get a well informed answer. Thanks for your time and responses!

1) For information regarding the transfer process refer to [Transferring to UVA](http://www.uvatransferadmission.blogspot.com/)

2) UVa’s honor’s programs are the Echols (CLAS) and Rodman Scholars (SEAS). They are selected as first year students when they are accepted to the university. You are invited, you do not apply. Interested students that are not selected do have the opportunity to apply in the spring of their first year. You can read more about the Rodman Scholars program here: [U.Va</a>. Engineering Rodman Scholars Program](http://www.seas.virginia.edu/students/rodmans/)

3)

I don’t think I’ve ever responded to a chance me post (other than to redirect to the dedicated forum), but this is a no-brainer. You’ve just listed information that was in the application package that UVa denied. Logically, you tell us…how do you expect us to respond if UVa denied the application?

I wish you the best of luck in your efforts to transfer, I just think a ‘chance me’ is premature with no additional information to be evaluated.

I sincerely thank you for your response.

1) I did do some research on UVA’s website and I did find information regarding when one is eligible to apply as a transfer. It mentioned that students who complete year at a university before a transfer are most competitive, but I was not sure if that was a requirement or simply a recommendation. I’m thinking it’s a recommendation but I wanted a second opinion. I’m sorry that I forgot to mention this beforehand. I took a look at the link you provided, however I was not able to find any clarification on that.

2) That is perfect, thank you

3) I’m apologize for my lack of clarification, but I meant how my transcript would look with the above information as only the part of my entire transcript concerning high school. Of course, I cannot change my high school transcript anymore, but I wanted an opinion on how my entire transcript would look to UVA when you also add my college information to my high school transcript. During my first semester or my entire first year at VCU (depending on when I reapply to VCU) I hope to partake in many more EC activities, such as for example tennis, and I’m expecting better grades. Many of my professors in the classes I took at my local community college honestly tried to match the class difficulty and course workload to match that of many 4 year universities like Virginia Tech and UVA, especially my professor for Differential Equations (which I got a B in by the way). Now I understand that a college like UVA is still going to be harder, I at least have an idea of what to expect and based on this expectation, I’m predicting that I will get mainly A’s and maybe a B here and there at VCU next year.
Based on the assumption that I will get mainly A’s and will partake in various EC activities that I failed to do so in high school coupled withy high school transcript, what do you think my general chance of getting in is? If I reapply mid year, I also understand that I won’t be able to use my first semester grades, but I know I will include all of my summer activities, VCU ECs, and my 2nd semester info for high school (I initially applied early action to UVA). I’m hoping to use this chance me to either boost my confidence or give me a wake up call on my weaknesses. Again I apologize for my failure to include this information initally. Thank you for your time.

First year students are not eligible to transfer after only one semester, even if he/she has earned more than 30 credits (through early summer classes). You may apply in the spring of your first-year for second-year transfer.
