Hi, I wanted to know if Stanford does transfer admissions. I will probably be going to Columbia SEAS, but I am thinking of possibly transferring to Stanford, because I know the weather there is terrific. Plus, I have some family really close to it.

Is transfer easy? I'm an international btw. Appreciate your comments.

Yes, they do transfer, but the acceptance rate is 5%.

That's the same as Harvard and Yale freshman admissions RD.

hmm...but do they gave any preference to students coming from reputed schools like Columbia or its all the same?

Er, Harvard and Yale's RD admissions are ~10%, not 5%. Unless you're talking about internationals...

No, Harvard and Yale's RD + Early admissions are 10%

RD is around 5%

In order to transfer successfully, you not only need top grades, but also you have to give the admissions committee a convincing story of why you want to transfer. Your stated reasons aren't going to impress Stanford. Columbia is a great school and I recommend staying there.

what kind of reasons are they looking for?

Also keep in mind that transfer aid for internationals is usually very limited or sometimes nonexistant. You'll need to check with Stanford, but keep that in mind if you'll be asking for FA.

As for reasons, you should look and see if there are any specific programs or professors that you'd like to study with at Stanford. You'll need something more compelling than the weather and proximity to your family.

cprrection: transfer acceptance 9%

not thathigh.......

i believe is around 5%..though i hope its a little higher.

The common data set for Stanford says the acceptance rate for transfers is ~5%.

http://www.stanford.edu/home/statistics/

Total applicants: 1,407
Admitted: 72
Acceptance rate: 5.1%

Let me say something, for perspective. I'm at Columbia SEAS now. My first choice was Stanford, and they flat out rejected me Early Admissions.

At the start of my year, especially after some friends visited me who were going to Stanford (they didn't start until later), I kept thinking about it. It was on my mind a lot, because I wanted to go there in the first place, and felt I was missing out on some things.

Then the year went by, and I learned to really like it here. I think about Stanford now and then, but I'm not sure if I would transfer now, given the chance, after I'm so used to it here, and like it here.

What I'm saying, basically, is don't even think about transferring until after you've gone through at least a semester at Columbia. Expel the thought from your mind. Try and enjoy that first semester (there's a reason transfer admissions aren't due until so late in the year), and then after that is done, reevaluate and see if you still really want to.

This is probably especially important given the low transfer rate, because if you keep that as your goal and then don't get in, you will be severely disappointed. Give the school that you haven't even gone to yet a chance.
