transfer

Hi,
I'm interested in transferring to Kenyon, but I'm a little concerned about my GPA and test scores.
I'm currently enrolled at a very prestigious and competitive honors program at a public university in New York City. I was actually quite lucky to be accepted as a freshman.

My SATs from high school are 700V 570M 660W and I didn't take the SATIIs. I didn't study for my SATs and I only took them once. I'm planning on retaking my SATIs before I submit my application (I'm aiming for around a 2200.)

My HS GPA was about a 3.7 weighted with a strong upward trend since freshman year.

I was ranked 22 out of 103 from a small public high school in its first year. The primary language outside of the classroom was Chinese, so that allowed for an interesting experience (I also learned Chinese.)

As far as E.C.s go, I was a founding editor of my HS newsletter, I tutored students in Spanish, played Racquetball, and held a corporate position on the art team for a major U.S. clothing retailer (I submitted supplemental information about this)

In College, I have similar ECs, an estimated 4.0 GPA (Almost a sure thing) and I feel as though I've really established a connected with Kenyon. I went to visit and interviewed with a senior (went well) and then again with the dean of transfer admissions, with whom I have stayed in contact. My second interview couldn't have gone any better. Also, my essays are all top notch (if I don't say so myself) I spent about two months working on them. I also have 2 very promising recommendations from professors in my major (english), and 1 from my HS English teacher who taught me for all four years.

SO, I'm wondering if I have a chance despite my average HS GPA and mediocre test scores (if I'm unable to raise them as high as I would like.)

Thanks so much!!!!

Did you get the number of transfers per year from admissions? I'm not sure how many are let in each year, but that number would help chance you.

It will be interesting to learn of your new SAT I results. Although certainly possible to raise scores from a 1930 to a 2200+, it is not likely. A better goal might be to get your math score above 600, while increasing your CR to 720 or so from 700.

112 apply and 23 are offered admissions (quoted from collegeboard.)

Coldwind, I agree that would a more feasible goal. It's hard for me to gauge because the first time around I didn't even take a practice test. I'm not sure how much studying for the exam can raise my grade, but I am expecting improvement (at least in Math, for sure.)

With improved scores, do you think Kenyon is a possibility for me?

Yes, I do think that with improved scores that Kenyon College is possible for you. And it is difficult for me to think of a more dramatic change of scenery than from New York City to Gambier, Ohio.

Yes, it is quite a drastic change but I have done a great deal of research and I feel that it's right for me. Also, I hate to knitpick but what do you think is a good SAT target range to make me a competitive applicant?
Thank you!

You should not approach exams like that, shoot for the top score!
