Transfer

I'm strongly considering transferring to USC. However, I am from the north (pennsylvania) and a lot of people are telling me that I'll have a hard time adjusting since I'm not from south carolina. Do you guys find this to be true. Will I have a hard time getting a bid for the higher ranked sororities and stuff?

It’s not true. You might have an issue with one or two sororities, but I wouldn’t worry about it.

You’ll have zero trouble fitting in…there are plenty of kids from PA (and more northern states like MA, CT and NH) at USC.

In prior years rush was somewhat discriminatory to transfers (or just anyone but freshmen) by design because a sophomore counted as two people instead of one. Taking a sophomore had some negative impact on the sororities; less time girls might be active resulting in less dues to be collected etc.

They changed all that this past year. No problems for sophomores or upper classes either.

The only reason you might have trouble with one or two sororities is because those one or two are heavily southern in their membership and tend to only take southern girls. It won’t be a problem with Tri Delts, Chi O’s, Alpha Chis among several other top sororities.

No reason for concern.

We toured the Greek Village this past Saturday at Scholar’s Weekend. Some sorority sisters from Tri Delta were conducting the tour. They confirmed exactly what Eadad said about the new rush system for sophomore and juniors/upperclassmen and they also pointed out that a bunch of them were not from SC. In fact, they made it seem like being from SC was somewhat of a handicap at their sorority. You’ll be fine.

Ohh, I wouldn’t go that far. I know there have been changes to rush numbers but being from the South would never be a “handicap” at an SEC school.

For more specific info about sororities, I’d suggest reading through Greekchat.com and their sections about SEC schools. There’s plenty of threads about what to do/not do during rush.

Good luck!
