I'm a senior in HS and was accepted EA to Stanford next year. I've been reading over the website trying to get a grasp and the kind of courses I will be taking next year but am kinda confused as to what classes that i have already taken will count for credit. As far as AP's both calc(5) and physics b(4) will give me credit and I am taking a calc 2 online course through university of iowa as well as two classes at a community college(general psych and contemporary world issues) I saw on the website that I must fill out an approval form for the transfer, and i think that they will, but i am curious, will these classes fulfill certain requirements? how will they factor into my gpa, or will they? I plan to major in international relations, btw. THANKS in advance to anyone that can help!!!

Hmm... I can tell you for sure that they will not factor into your Stanford GPA. I took courses at UC Irvine this summer, and on my Stanford transcript, I have:

UC Irvine: 15 units

No grades. Outside courses do not count towards the Stanford GPA. However, when I apply to medical school this summer, I will send out transcripts from both Stanford and UCI, so the grades will eventually matter.

You're right about needing to fill out the approval form for transferring credit. I do not know if those classes will be able to fulfill GER or major requirements. You can look through the bulletin http://bulletin.stanford.edu to see if any classes look similar to what you took and petition for credit. I'm pretty sure you'll get the units towards graduation, but I'm not sure about GER/major. When you get here, I'm sure your advisor will know.

PS Congrats!

I'll be interning at Sandia for the next couple of summers, so I was thinking that I could take some community college classes (they're in the same city). Will that affect me negatively in Med School applications? Like, I don't want to take Spanish again at Stanford (etc.), especially since I'm trying to go for a double major w/ polisci and bio...

I already have taken English and Stat there b/w sophomore and junior years, so can I include that in med school apps? Would it be better to take courses at a UC/UC Extension?

No med school committee is going to care about where you took your English, Stat, or Spanish classes. Do they have anything to do with what you're going to be doing? Nah, not really. So as long as the bulk of your classes (sciences, maths, the core stuff) are done at Stanford, you'll be fine. The only caveat I'm going to add is to make sure your English class can be counted. Most med schools recommend a year of English, and since IHUM and PWR generally count for 2 quarters, you'll need a third.

I'll be taking SLE. That fulfills almost all of those GER requirements, doesn't it? I guess I'll find out more when they send out the info in April...

Hmm just to hijack this thread. Does anyone know what credits one will get for the GCE 'A' Level examinations? Thanks in advance.
