Transfering from Boston University

I am a freshman at Boston University and after my first semester, I have realized it is not the right fit for me and I am looking to transfer. I've realized that I want a campus and a more spirited school. The scene is a bit too artsy for me and the social scene/party scene is really lacking...

I am very interested in transferring to Syracuse University's Newhouse School. Currently, I am a communication major at BU interested in the field of sports journalism either newspaper/online or possibly broadcast. I want to minor in either math or marketing and am also interested in going to law school. I am drawn to the school spirit/sports environment of Syracuse and of course the prestige of Newhouse.

In high school, I had a 4.3 weighted gpa (I don't know how that translates to the 4.0 scale) and a 2090 (1410/1600) on my SAT. For extra curriculars, I was involved with newspaper and radio club. I feel I would have had a good chance of gaining admission out of high school, but I am nervous about my chances now. After a tough first semester, I'm gonna end up with around a 3.4 or 3.5 GPA.

What do you think my chances are for getting in? I'm also thinking about Cornell, if I could get in, and Binghamton as a safety.

Can I please get some responses?

I think you should be good for Syracuse, but I am having difficulty in finding their transfer acceptance rate. Cornell is a low reach IMO.

Hey,

you probably have a good shot at Syracuse but can you tell why you want to transfer out of BU? I’m looking to transfer as a junior and am applying to both BU and Syracuse for their Communication school. It worries me if someone is transferring because it sucks.

It all depends on the person. I am very sports-oriented and I am having trouble meeting any1 that is like me at BU. Most of the kids I’ve met in my com class are artsy/hipster types. It’s just not me. Also, the student body does not seem that together/bonded as it is a city school. What kinds of things are you looking for in a school?

You seem to be a pretty good fit for Syracuse; academically and socially. Someone that goes to my current university said that Syracuse is a very spirited school but the primary downfall is the massive amount of snow they get. Also, I’ve heard that it has a really really good communications program. Overall, your SAT and high school GPA are great, when it comes to your college GPA so far, just try to do really well next semester for your midterm report and you should be fine.

Yeah I don’t like artsy/hipster style kids either. But BU is a big school with all kinds so I’m sure if I go there I can find a good group of friends. Syracuse is definitely more focused on sports and partying so you might like it a lot more.

I’m leaning toward BU over SU actually because of the fact Boston is a way better city than Syracuse and there are internships right in the city where as options are limited in SU. Additionally, while I like partying as much as the next guy, I feel Boston has more variety in things to do and more diversity in the student body.

Is there any chance I can get into Cornell with a 3.5 first semester (same hs stats/sat as above)… Would doing really well for my midterm report for second semester help???
