Transfering from NYU to UCLA

Hi,

So even though I got rejected from UCLA and denied by appeal, I still won't give up on graduating from the college of my hometown.

I was reading this page:
Transfer Admission Guide - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions

The criteria for transfers seems pretty difficult to complete as a student not attending a CCC. In NYU I'll be in a rigid program (Liberal Studies Program) and freshmen year I can only choose one of my classes, and 3 sophomore year. I do have 5 (maybe 6) AP credits, wonder if those will help.

Is there a place that condenses this information into a more streamlined version or is there anyone here who transferred from a private or non-CA university?

Thanks

You’re moronic. Why are you wasting $50k a year at NYU if you already know that you have no intention or desire to graduate from there? If UCLA is your dream school then why are you not taking the CC route? Good lord.

My parents won’t let me go to a CC.

^waste of money. if you plan to transfer into UCLA, just go to a CC for two years and transfer - in the end, you’ll have a bachelor’s from UCLA.

if your parents are concerned about image or the “stigma” of going to a CC, then reassure them that your final goal is UCLA at the end of your four year journey.

^Wrong. Do you realize getting into UCLA from CC is perhaps ever more competitive than gaining freshman admissions? Even if the admit rate is higher, the competition nowadays in CC is unbelievable. CC is very packed.

I’d say just go to NYU. New York is an EXCELLENT place and its perhaps even better than L.A.
Go there for bachelors and come back to UCLA for masters. Its that simple.
Trust me, once you go to NYU, you’ll like it.

^Are you talking about places with TAP?

Well either way I can’t go to a CC, they would rather take out 20k loans for NYU than have me go to SMC.

I know everyone says NYC is better than LA, I disagree having lived in both. I plan to live, have a family, and work in LA. I also want to get into CA politics, so UCLA is much much better in terms of networking for that.

Does anyone have any answers to my question? I wouldn’t ask if I hadn’t already soldified my plans and sought alternatives.

^Then we can’t help you my friend. You need to sit down and talk to your parents about this.

Taking a year off sounds like a good option. But if you really want to go to NYU with the attitude of transferring and that it’s not good enough for you…then you’ll be very unhappy. I was in a similar situation with high school.

I did not like my public high school at all as I was rejected from the private ones. I kept thinking that I would transfer out, but I still didn’t get in as a transfer…I was DEVASTATED.
Also, the people around me sensed that I thought this public school was “inferior” and that I wanted to get away from it…it sorta put me in a bad position socially speaking.
It also influenced me academically–I kept not taking the teachers seriously with the attitude that I would be transferring out. I didn’t learn anything.

What I’m trying to say is, you should go to a place where you’ll feel happy. You’re 18, so your parents can’t control you. Go to a CC if you must. Or take a year off.

If you’re going to NYU with that attitude of transferring…then NYU isn’t for you.

I don’t mind going to NYU, but I would prefer being in UCLA. I can’t just quit now because we’ve already paid the 800 dollar deposit.

I understand the situation you’re describing, but my fate is pretty much sealed at NYU for the next 2 years at least and I would rather be at UCLA.

Well, you can waste away $800, be happy by taking a year off or going to CC to solely concentrate on UCLA…but if the transfer doesn’t work out, you could be screwed.
or
You can spend two years of NYU tuition, be unhappy at NYU…however, if the transfer doesn’t work out, you’ll still be recieving a degree from one of America’s finest universities.

IF I were you, I’d be happy to go to NYU…you can still come back to grad school in CA to be with your family and make your own family…you can definitely get into the political network if you go to UCLA for grad school. I don’t see why its such a big issue.

Honestly, I still think you’ll like NYC…maybe you need to see it in a new perspective? After watching Sex and the City, I find NYC really appealing ;)

You know, you’re right John. I think UCLA Law would be good enough and NYU would be more than good enough for undergrad.

is you have the money, do NYU. that school is ****ing awesome. get good grades and complete the major prep, do CC over summer if you have to (wouldn’t hurt you).
