This is kind of a long story, but please bear with me. I graduated high school with my IB diploma in 2013. I went out of state to SUNY Oswego in New York, which is not a very good school to be honest. I want to transfer to either USF or UF because I live in Tampa and I want to come back to Florida. The problem is, I didn’t do too well in school my first year. I was originally an economics major, and I just recently changed it so I ended up with a 2.53 GPA which is the lowest it has ever been. I am a Resident Assistant next year and I am planning on working really hard to bring my GPA back up, so that I can transfer in the summer or fall of 2015. I am Psychology major and I am following a pre-med track. I wouldn’t mind going to either school, but I just want to know which one will most likely accept me. I am very involved in school and the only thing sinking me down is my GPA which is the most important thing. Also, if anybody knows anything about bright futures, do you think I could still claim it? I know I have 2 years to claim it so fall of 2015 would be the cut off for me, but do they still gve it to me if I leave the state and come back? Please, If you could answer any of these questions or tll what you think I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

They do give it to you if you leave the state, from the bright futures website:

You should call and make sure you’ve meet the requirements: 1-888-827-2004

UF has a Psychology major and a Psychology-Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience major, both under CLAS (College of liberal Arts and Sciences). Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience requires a 3.5 GPA to be competitive, while the standard Psychology major requires a 2.75 GPA to be competitive. See the following link for minimum criteria needed to be considered for each major:

USF likely is less competitive, see the following link for requirements:

Good Luck!

THANK YOU!! This is very helpful

You have nothing to lose by applying to both schools, so I don’t understand why you just don’t apply to both and then wait to see which school accepts your transfer?

I will have you know that UF is a much more renowned institution than USF overall–more highly ranked, much better reputation, more name recognition, much better athletics program, more world-class professors and programs of study, much more beautiful campus, etc. Even though USF has a huge student population, most of its students come from the Tampa Bay area, as it’s much more of a commuter school compared to UF. Very few people live on campus at USF compared to UF, which I’m assuming is important to you since you currently live on campus at your current school and will be working as an RA next year.

FWIW, UF seems more lenient on transfer students who are FL residents. A number of my peers at FAU applied to UF as transfer students during freshman and sophomore years, and it seemed like the kids whose transfers were accepted were FL residents whereas those who were denied were from out-of-state/non-residents.

Also, keep in mind that even though you attend SUNY-Oswego, if you’re under 25 years of age and your parents live in FL, then you’re still a FL resident for tuition purposes.

At the end of the day, USF should be your fallback option for UF, especially since UF is, arguably, the best state university in FL. If you’re not admitted to UF, you can always attend USF. If you’re final undergraduate GPA isn’t that strong, you may be resigned to attending one of less prestigious state universities for med school, assuming you decide to stay in FL for med school.

Thank you
