I'm currently a junior at University of North Florida. Due to an illness in the family (and lack of funds to live in a dorm), I'd like to move closer to home. I applied to USF this month (January) as an upper-level transfer. They have received my transcripts from the community college I attended as well as my current university. I just have to send them my final transcript once I finish the Spring semester at University of North Florida. How quickly will they make a decision? I need to know because if they reject me for some reason, I'd have to stay at University of North Florida and pay for my housing, sign up for classes, etc. If the decision comes too late (like, later than April) than it would be difficult to do these things at UNF due to time constraints if I am denied admission to USF.

Second, do think I'd be accepted? I graduated with my high school diploma and associate's degree in June 2011 (I attended a collegiate high school, I took college classes for high school credit and college credit) and I have a 3.7 GPA at UNF. I am double-majoring in accounting and history. I was told I'd be a "shoo-in" before but I don't know if transfers are different.

Lastly, I know I have to put USF on the FAFSA this year, but how will my Bright Futures transfer? Do I have to tell them that I'm transferring so my funds get transferred to USF (if I'm accepted)?

You should phone USF admissions (813 974-3350) and ask some of your questions directly. They are usually very helpful and are the ones who can best tell you about timeframe for admission decision to help you with your planning. With a 3.7 GPA you should get in, but some programs, such as nursing, are very competitive and selective, there are no guarantees for getting a spot. Accounting is a popular major at USF and the program enjoys a good reputation. The Bright Futures issue will be transparent, USF financial aid office should take care of it automatically.

One thing for you to consider with both schools now is your current financial situation. Go to the UNF financial aid office and tell them about illness in your family and that it has changed your finances–they might be able to do something more for you now to help you. Same with USF financial aid office. If the FAFSA you’re doing now, as an example, shows a parent making $100.000 income 2011, but it was mostly from part of year when parent was well and the last 3 months of year was sick and earned less or nothing–the financial aid office can possibly make adjustments and give you more aid. Anyway, make sure to describe your present financial situation to both financial aid offices now–go see them, it can’t hurt at least trying. Good Luck!

6650 transfers enrolled at USF’s Tampa campus this year. USF-Tampa has about 40,000 students now with around 30,000 undergraduates and about 10,000 graduate students.
