Transfering with my AA to another University. What should I major in?

Hello all.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reading and responding to this. I really appreciate it. :slight_smile:

I am 17 and just graduated high school and am about to graduate with my Associates of Arts degree in three weeks…

I have been interested in getting a double degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology.
But more recently, I have been looking into having a 3rd major, getting me a triple degree.
The major I am interested in doing this is computer science, or something else in the computer field.

What are some other computer majors that I could possibly major in to stand out from the crowd?

Also, in about how long would it take me to achieve these 3 majors if I plan on taking a full course load every semester (18 credits)?

Thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate it.

Are you actually transferring? Or will you count as a freshman applicant since you went to community college during high school? Find out. The two admissions processes are completely different.

The great thing about college is that you can take various electives in addition to your major courses. However, if you plan on completing college in two or three years then double or triple majoring would be difficult. I think the benefit of the third major will be less than the cost if getting a third major requires you to stay in school longer. CS by itself is likely to be very time consuming. CS and one other major might be doable. Getting good internship experience would make you stand out more to employers than a third major.

@bodangles I am transferring. I am graduating community college 2 months after I graduated high school.

I had that same question at first also. But after going back and forth with my high school counselors and college advisors, I have confirmed that I am a transfer student.

@CheddarcheeseMN Thank you!

Depends on the college you want to apply to and if you are planning to go to work right after BA/BS or go to Graduate school.

If you are going to work right after BA/BS, Id follow what @CheddarcheeseMN said. If you are planning on going to a top graduate school, My advice to you is don’t triple major. If you are finishing early, Take Graduate level courses as an undergraduate. If done correctly, your final year will be all graduate courses. This will look alot better than taking a 3rd major…dont be a jack of all trades… specialize and perfect your craft.

I know how you feel about that 3rd major. You are very interested in it to consider doing a 3rd degree. However, Id say, explore this field as a hobby. Maybe take an elective course or a few summer courses in CS to get your feet wet. Supplement this with online readings, MIT opencoursewares, and amazon books. Use this as an EC.

Another point to bring up, Im not sure of the actual ratio… But Ive heard" 12 units at Berkeley equate to about 21 units of Community College. Not it rigor, but sheer amount of work. The average student there takes 16 units. Comparing this to other college and their majors may be a bit lower. Do the math…

Yes, 18 credits is too many.
