Transferred to FSU and not liking it....

Hello, I'm originally from south Florida (Ft. Lauderdale). I went to Broward College, a community college in South Florida and was in the honors program. I had to go to community college for financial reasons and the honors institute at BC sounded good because they gave me a scholarship each semester...

I originally wanted to major in Social Work. I transferred with my AA to FSU because they have a top Social Work school in Florida. However, after taking SW classes at FSU, I decided that this major was not for me. I decided to go into FSU's College of Business. I am finishing up a few prereq's that I didn't take because I was a SW major originally. So far I am very disappointed with FSU's College of Business. The prereq professors for the College of Business that I currently have are very rude and discouraging. Also, the staff within the College of Business are also very rude and condescending.

I want to major in accounting and have been discouraged by some of the staff at FSU. I'm hoping to stick it out, receive my BA here and then go to grad school somewhere else. I want to leave FSU because I can't seem to get used to it here. It is the total opposite of South Florida. I feel pretty lonely because I still haven't made very many friends. I would like to return to South Florida after my BA, and was thinking about attending University of Miami's Grad school to get my MA in Accounting.

My questions are: Should I deal with FSU's crap and stay here for grad school and study accounting? Or would it be a good idea to apply to Grad school at University of Miami for accounting? I'm not sure if accounting is a strength at UM.

Lots of people transfer twice, don’t feel bad about doing that if you can find a place that suits you better and that you can afford. Why don’t you look for Accounting majors using a search engine like [College MatchMaker - Type of School](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board) to see what options you have besides UM in South Florida?

For help with the “should I transfer” and “where should I go to grad school” questions, you might want to post some questions at the Transfer and Grad School Forums. You can find both of them by clicking on “Discussion Home” in the upper left of this screen, and then scrolling down.

Good luck!

The FSU CoB is a limited access program and they have more students than they can handle.

It’s too early to tell for grad school, you should just apply to both and see what they offer you. For undergrad I guess you should just put up with it at FSU. Miami is just too expensive and your other options in S. FL aren’t so great…

Parent2Noles: I know the CoB is limited access but it’s pretty easy to get into. Since I had my AA already, I’m finishing up 3 prereq’s right now and then I’ll be officially part of the CoB. Were/are your kids part of the CoB at FSU? If so, have they had a good experience with it? Because right now, Im pretty disappointed and would like some more insight.

happymomof1: Thanks for the question advice.

Gordon: Thanks for the advice

Bf2011,

I don’t know about sticking it out if your miserable. Did you ever apply to UM? People write off the school as too expensive without seeing what merit/need based aid they would qualify for. Just because “so and so’s brother” only got X amount of $ shouldn’t be your guide. Don’t be a “coulda, shoulda, wouda” Go ahead and apply. UM has a great accounting program, further strengthened by a generally stronger peer group. Miami’s SBA is one of its premier college/schools and Dean’s Kahn and Neider really look out for the undergrads. The profs are accessible and friendly, and class sizes are small.

Its your education, do what is best to further it.

One of the subjects I studied was accounting (at FSU). Some professors can be quite tough while others are easier to deal with. I had a good experience in the CoB.

I was doing some research online and since I would be an Upper-level transfer applying to UMiami, they strongly recommend transfers to go in with Managerial Acct. At FSU, accounting majors do not have to take Managerial Acct. So that would cause some problems because I would not have taken it. I miss South Florida so much! I’m probably going to just stick it out at FSU for now… I did buy a class ring here already…haha. I guess I will need to wait until it comes to the point of applying to grad. schools. Do you know if UMiami has the 4+1 program like FSU does, where if you get your BA there, you can get your MA in 1 year? I definitely plan on applying to UMiami for grad school. Also, thanks for some encouragement about UMiami.
