Transferring after 1 year of CC, Help!

There are many reasons why i want to transfer after the first year of CC, but the main reason is the nobody takes it seriously, not even my guidance counselors. I’m going to start my freshman year this fall, but i took a class over the summer, and even though it was only a month course, you can feel the bad atmosphere that school gives off. My one of my guidance counselors didn’t even know what an IT major was or what they did! They get mad when you ask them simple questions. One of the main reason why i chose cc is because i didn’t get into my top school. I wasn’t a A+ student but neither an F- student, i was an average student Bs and C+. I got into some really good schools in my state but chose not to go there because they weren’t the best for my major and didn’t want to waste money on a school that wasn’t the best for me. I got some questions regarding my situation:

  1. What's the best way to go about this?

2.Will I get less financial aid if i transfer as a sophomore?

  1. What are some scholarships/grants i can apply to?(NJ)

Any opinions will be appreciated also.

If your aid is need-based, it will probably be about the same. If the aid you were offered before was merit-based, it will probably not be as good if you apply as a transfer. Read through the specific information at the websites of your target colleges/universities and find out if your one summer class has turned you into a transfer applicant. if not, it might make better sense for you to take a gap year and apply for fall 2016.

All that said, don’t judge your CC based on one summer class that was only one month long. Your experience during the school year (especially in classes that are required for your major) could be completely different. In order to optimize your transfer opportunities, don’t speak with the general counselors. Make appointments with the Transfer Advisor and with the Department Advisor for your major. They have the expertise you need for your longer term goals.
