So I was rejected from my big number 1 the University of Michigan and it was pretty heartbreaking for me I have wanted to go there for a while. Anyway, Im going to the University of Connecticut next year I am a Connecticut resident and its totally affordable, but as of now I want to transfer from there to Michigan at the end of my Freshman year. I was wondering if anyone had any advice they could give me besides the standard, get good grades and stay involved. I would be transferring as a history major from #60 ranked UCONN history program to #9 ranked Michigan history program.

I think one of the biggest downfalls to my application was my GPA and standardized test scores I had about a 3.5 out 4.0 with a 28 ACT. I took the hardest available AP and Honors courses throughout high school just slacked off a little too much. I did a bunch of extracurriculars, two varsity sports, youth in government, Debate team captain, intern at Yale and a bunch of community service with the local church in my town.

All and all I would really appreciate any advice, stories, or really anything about transferring one year into my undergrad, I know its a little unconventional since most transfer after sophomore year. Thank you so much, I truly appreciate it!

P.S sorry about any grammar mistakes

It’s not unconventional at all. Get a 4.0 or as close as possible and you should have a great chance. That’s the bottom line. If you get a 4.0 (which, honestly, shouldn’t be that difficult at UConn), I’d be surprised if you get rejected. If you get a 3.5 or lower, I’d be surprised if you get in.

I’m transferring after one year (if I get accepted), and there’s nothing wrong with it.

really, I thought it was totally out of the ordinary to transfer after freshman year. Ok then I think I will have a good shot with a 4.0 at UCONN. Do you plan on transferring to Mich too? if so from where?

No, not to Michigan. I applied mostly to liberal arts colleges (from GW).

Awesome well good luck to you, thanks for the advice

I assume since you applied as a fr that you are OK with the 55k/year cost for UM as an OOS student?

yea i mean ill probably apply for financial aid, but my family has put together a college fund for me that was meant for me going to a 4 year school at 60k a year, not to sound spoiled its something they planned. Im a first generation college student and very fortunate.

About the only publics that are at all generous with FA for OOS students are UVA and UNC-CH.

Thank your parents every day, they’ve done you an immense service :).

hahahha thanks, youre right i should probably tell them more often how much i appreciate it lol…
