So here's my story. I attended George Washington U. as a freshmen but due to financial reasons I had to transfer to an instate school (West Virginia University). I've not been very happy with my time at WVU, mostly due to the atmosphere (both the town and the student body). I applied to transfer to Boston University and was accepted, however I'm torn on my decision to stay or go. I'm a Junior and planning on taking the MCAT this spring/summer. I'm wondering whether it'll be better to stay or to transfer, with regards to getting into medical school. I'd like to get into a good medical school.

I currently have a 3.5 GPA.
My reasons for staying would be:
1. courses are easier at WVU so more time to study for the MCAT
2. Already have research set up
3. already have physician shadowing set up

You don’t know that for sure

Great reason to stay

3 schools in 3 years looks odd and how are you going to get any leadership experience, longterm involvement in anything, or good LORs if you’re constantly jumping around?

Unless you think WVU is so bad that it is affecting your health or grades, don’t leave.

If you are that unhappy, transfer, but if you transfer you will need to postpone your application until after graduation.

Why? It takes time to re-establish yourself at your new school and gain the relationships/contacts needed to get LORs, research and volunteering. BU offers its pre-meds a Dean’s Letter/Letter of Evaluation–something you will need in your application packet. (The lack of one could be construed as a red flag by med school adcomms.) Will BU offer you one if you’ve only completed 1 semester at the university? Extremely doubtful.

So–the choice is yours. It depends on what is more important to you.

BTW, there is a correlation with multiple undergrad transfers and a lack of success in the med school application process.

I’d like to get into a good medical school.

ALL US MD schools are good. ALL are VERY good. We don’t have any US MD schools that aren’t “good”.

What are your parents saying?

If you had to leave GWU for financial reasons then you’re not going to be able to afford BU…right? You’re not likely going to get great aid as a transfer.

BU doesn’t meet need…and certainly doesn’t for transfer students.

When do you get your aid pkg?

I’m a Junior

Oh good heavens. Stay at your current school. Get thru it. Next year you’ll be busy with the app process and won’t care how your school’s atmosphere is.
