I am a freshmen but I am not satisfied with the boarding school I am at right now. I know it is very early in the school year but what is the process for applying to a different school as a sophmore?
Do I have to take the SSATs again? I am first singles for tennis at my school right now so should I email the coach of the school I want to transfer to?
Most schools expect you to pay full tuition if you enroll - even if you leave during the year. So it is unlikely that you will be able to get your tuition back.
But it’s early still. Perhaps your advisor or dorm parent can help you figure out how to make your current situation better – which you should do even if you plan to transfer. Usually, the adjustment is rough and it works out over time, but sometimes, the school is not the right fit.
To transfer successfully, you are going to need to articulate a good reason for wanting to change that revolves around why the new school is right for you (rather than why the current one is wrong.)
One of my students tried to transfer after her third form year to another boarding school but was not successful. For both college and BS transfers, I think it’s more difficult than reg admissions and typically you need to identify what the new school has that the old school doesn’t that you want or need. The grass isn’t always greener, so i think its best to make the most of the opportunity before you and don’t waste time thinking about what might have been.
I think it would be easier to transfer if it was due to academic reasons than social reasons. I think another school might be hesitant to take you, however. Here’s another legit reason, you are currently a day/boarding student and want to switch. The reason would be, you would have taken different things into consideration, for example gone to a bigger/smaller school. Or, If a school has a particular program that you now realize you really want and yours doesn’t have it at all. I agree with prepped parent, the grass is always greener. But that said, you should also be considering if prep school is a fit for you. Maybe you’d prefer/do better in the local public school.
It is early in the school year. After the winter break, you may feel much more at home at your current school. If you want to transfer schools, the best thing to do is to work hard in your classes, join activities and be a “good citizen.”
You should also talk with your parents and your advisor at school about your feelings. Many students find changing schools stressful. You probably have classmates who look as if they’re having a wonderful time, but who are acutely miserable. Joining extracurricular activities will help you to find “your people.”
