Transferring Colleges after Financial Aid goes through?

I had decided to apply to Salisbury University about mid October. I have applied but have not received an acceptance letter yet.

I start classes at UMaine in 3 days and Stafford Loans, Pell Grant and Sallie Mae have already paid for everything and my small refund check is in the mail.

I want to know if it is to late to withdraw from UMaine for this semester and attend Salisbury and switch over my financial aid without any problems. Or since everything has been paid for, am I stuck at UMaine for another semester?

I know the tuitions are different and Salisbury I would be receiving in-state tuition versus UMaine where I pay Out-of-state tuition...

It’s safe to say that if you have not heard back from the college you applied to in October, you most likely will not before the start of the spring semester. They do not want to give students so little time to prepare. That being said, transferring out of your current college would be quite difficult at this time as well. It is best to finish the year off at your current college and reapply for the fall semester at the one you wish to attend. Make sure to beat the deadlines however. Those are the biggest factors.

Pick up the phone and call Salisbury to find out about this delay. You should know the Yes/No answer by now.

If you don’t go back to Maine for this semester, the federal money will be available at Salisbury. It will just take some time for the paperwork.

If you are unhappy at Maine, it is OK to withdraw now. There is no reason to shell out that OOS tuition and fees. If you can’t start somewhere in state this semester, take the time off and get a job fir a while instead.

You need to check with UMaine and find out what the last date is that you can withdraw from Maine and not have to pay any tuition and fees and/or room & board. otherwise you could find yourself in the situation of all the FA having to be repaid but you still owe money to the school. Check with them to be sure, only they can give you a definitive answer.

If you are able to withdraw and not owe any funds to the school, all the financial aid at your current school would have to be cancelled and it would be repaid. The new school would have to award you a new financial aid package. If you have not received an acceptance letter yet, it does seem unlikely you will be able to start this semester.
