My high school has a program through which students can get college credits through our local community college. We have to pass a placement exam and pay a sum of money each semester. I don’t know if I should pay for the credits because I don’t know if I’ll be able to transfer them to standard colleges. If anyone has knowledge in this area, it would be greatly appreciated.
Our D took courses at the local CC (where she was enrolled as a full-time student after her JR year of HS & passing the GED exam) and got college credits from the CC which all applied at the U she transferred to (USoCal). She didn’t have to pass any particular HS exams or pay any funds to the HS as she was no longer at the HS. I’d try contacting the U you plan to attend and ask them what their policies are and whether there’s any benefit for having this “placement” test from your HS and paying the associated fees.
Some private colleges do not grant transfer credit for college courses taken on a high school campus.
You may want to investigate the transfer credit policies of the colleges (public and private) that you may be interested in transferring the credit to.
My child’s high school had a similar program. We actually didn’t think it mattered and never even contacted the community college to see about the credits. This summer my child took a summer class at the community college and had the transcripts sent for his transfer credit. To our surprise when he checked his university portal he had nine extra credits from those dual credit courses that the university has applied to gen eds. It is a nice surprise and definitely worth it.
