I have been admitted to NYU CAS and will most likely attend next year. This summer, I planned to take Calc I at a community college. If I get an A in this course, can I place out of the required math class (Calc I) for my freshmen year at NYU CAS by transferring the credits?

*I took AP Calc AB last year but did not place out of it. I don't want to take it in college so I want to place out of it and focus more on courses related to my major (history + politics).

high_jumper, If the community college you plan to take the Calc I course is an accredited program and you get a minimum required grade, you should be able to waive out of Quantitative Reasoning, a required MAP course for CAS students. My understanding is that you can be exempted from the Quantitative Reasoning course, which is one semester, if you have gotten a score of 4 or 5 in the AP Calc AB or AP Calc BC exams (the latter with a score of 5 will give you credit for two Math classes). Or you can transfer in credit from an equivalent course at an accredited college.

To do the latter, you should call up the NYU Advising Office first. Ask to speak to an advisor there and make sure the community college you plan to take the course at and the specific course will be accepted by NYU CAS. You do not want to take the course and then find out that for whatever reason NYU finds it unacceptable. It is best to be prepared with a syllabus, if possible. Also, be sure to ask about the minimum grade required for credit at NYU CAS.
